St Louis Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright tossed seven shutout
innings to win a pitcher's duel against Chicago Cubs rookie Kyle
Hendricks.
Wainwright (13-5) allowed just five hits and Matt Holliday homered
in the first inning to give the Cardinals (56-48) the only run they
needed.
Hendricks was solid in his third Major League outing, and allowed
the one run in 6 1/3 innings.
Closer Trevor Rosenthal earned his 32nd save in 36 opportunities
with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Angels 2, Tigers 1
Third baseman David Freese hit a solo home run in the bottom of the
eighth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a victory over the
Detroit Tigers.
Right-hander Joe Smith (4-0) induced groundouts from all three
batters he faced in the top of the eighth to earn the win for Los
Angeles (63-41).
Detroit (57-45) starter Rick Porcello (12-5) tossed seven innings
and took a no-decision.

Mets 2, Brewers 0
Lucas Duda launched a go-ahead two-run home run, his third of the
series and 18th of the season, boosting the Mets to a victory over
the Milwaukee Brewers.
Duda's homer backed another stellar outing from Jacob deGrom. The
rookie right-hander (5-5, 2.79 ERA) won his fourth consecutive start
for the Mets (owning 0.66 ERA over that stretch), throwing 6 1/3
innings of shutout ball while allowing four hits and striking out
four.
With the loss, Milwaukee (59-47) had their lead in the National
League Central cut to just two games.

Braves 8, Padres 3
Pitcher Mike Minor worked effectively into the seventh inning, and
the Braves backed him with a six-run third en route to a victory
over the Padres.
Center fielder B.J. Upton had two singles, stole a base and scored
two times and the Braves (57-48) remain 1 1/2 games behind
first-place Washington in the National League East.

Orioles 3, Mariners 2
Manny Machado drove in two runs, including a sacrifice fly in the
top of the 10th inning, as the Baltimore Orioles continued their
extra-inning dominance with a win over the Seattle Mariners.
Baltimore (58-46) extended their winning streak in extra-inning
games to six. The Orioles are 11-3 this season in games that go past
the ninth inning.

Red Sox 3, Rays 2
David Ortiz hit a mammoth three-run homer and Allen Webster earned
his first victory of the season as the Boston Red Sox defeated the
Tampa Bay Rays.
With the win, the Red Sox (48-57) ended a five-game slide and
snapped the Rays' (51-54) season-high nine-game winning streak.

Blue Jays 5, Yankees 4
Dioner Navarro had a tiebreaking single with two outs in the top of
the ninth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays edged the New York Yankees
for their second straight win at Yankee Stadium following a 17-game
losing streak there.
The Blue Jays (56-50) won for the seventh time in 10 games despite
blowing a 2-0 lead and a pair of one-run leads. They manufactured
the go-ahead run in the ninth against New York closer David
Robertson (1-3).

Nationals 4, Reds 2
Doug Fister pitched seven shutout innings and first baseman Adam La
Roche delivered a two-run single, lifting the Washington Nationals
to a victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
Fister (10-2) allowed only three hits with one walk and Washington
(57-45) now lead the National League East by two games over the
Atlanta Braves.

Pirates 7, Rockies 5
Josh Harrison had four hits, including a tie-breaking home run, as
the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies and avoided a
three-game sweep.
Harrison's homer in the eighth put Pittsburgh (55-49) ahead 6-5 and
propelled them to victory.

Indians 10, Royals 3
First baseman Carlos Santana homered twice and drove in four runs as
the Cleveland Indians routed the Kansas City Royals to prevent a
four-game sweep.
Santana hit a two-run homer in the fifth and another two-run shot in
the ninth, upping his home run count to 20.
Left fielder Ryan Raburn and designated hitter Yan Gomes also
homered for the Indians (52-53).

Twins 4, White Sox 3
Sam Fuld's RBI single with two outs in the seventh inning broke a
tie game as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Chicago White Sox.
Fuld and Danny Santana had two RBIs apiece for the Twins (47-57).

Phillies 4, Diamondbacks 2
Ryan Howard hit a homer and scored the go-ahead run on a
controversial overturned play at the plate as the Philadelphia
Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Tied 2-2 with two outs in the sixth, D-Backs second baseman Didi
Gregorius dropped Marlon Byrd's popup in left field. On the throw
home, umpires ruled after a replay challenge that catcher Miguel
Montero illegally blocked Howard, who scored from first base on the
play.

Marlins 4, Astros 2
Garrett Jones and Marcell Ozuna slugged solo home runs to power the
Miami Marlins to a victory over the Houston Astros and an
interleague series sweep.
Jones' blast to right field in the first inning, his 11th, capped
the Marlins' (51-53) three-run frame against Astros (42-63)
right-hander Collin McHugh (4-9).

Dodgers 4, Giants 3
The Los Angeles Dodgers used a three-run fifth inning to take the
lead for good en route to a victory over the San Francisco Giants
and a three-game sweep in the matchup of National League West
front-runners.
Left-hander Ryu Hyun-jin earned his 12th win and three Dodgers
relievers combined for three innings of shutout ball as Los Angeles
(59-47) moved 1 1/2 games ahead of San Francisco (57-48) after
beginning the series 1 1/2 games back.
Shortstop Hanley Ramirez broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the
fifth, and left fielder Carl Crawford drove in the eventual winning
run with a triple, propelling the Dodgers.

Athletics 9, Rangers 3
Yoenis Cespedes and John Jaso combined for four hits and five RBIs,
leading the Oakland Athletics to a victory over the Texas Rangers.
Oakland (65-39) took two of three games from Texas (41-64) in the
weekend series between the first- and last-place teams in the
American League West.
Oakland left-hander Scott Kazmir (12-3) latest five innings, and
giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks. He struck out two.
