Twins 2, Royals 1
Right-hander Kyle Gibson pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the
Minnesota Twins to a 2-1 win over the Kansas City Royals.
Gibson (9-8) limited the Royals to two singles and two walks while
striking out seven. Gibson, who missed his previous start because of
back stiffness, left after 95 pitches.
Josh Willingham and Brian Dozier had RBIs for the Twins (48-57),
while Eric Hosmer homered in the ninth inning for Kansas City
(53-52).

Orioles 7, Angels 6 (12 innings)
Manny Machado led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a home run,
giving the Baltimore Orioles a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles
Angels.
The third baseman hit an RBI double earlier in the game to help the
Orioles (59-46) keep their 2 1/2-game lead over the Toronto Blue
Jays in the American League East.
Right-hander Ryan Webb (3-1) got the win after escaping a jam and
retiring the Angels (63-42) in the 12th.

A's 7, Astros 4
Yoenis Cespedes and Brandon Moss delivered consecutive RBI singles
in the ninth inning as the Oakland Athletics rallied for six runs in
the top of the ninth en route to a 7-4 victory over the Houston
Astros.
The Astros (43-64) appeared in prime shape for a surprising series
victory when right-hander Josh Fields worked a perfect eighth
inning, but the Athletics (66-40) rallied spectacularly.

Rays 5, Brewers 1
Alex Cobb stifled the Milwaukee Brewers for eight innings and Ben
Zobrist provided all the offense the Tampa Bay Rays needed, knocking
in the tying and eventual winning runs with a homer and a double in
a 5-1 win.
Zobrist's one-out double in the bottom of the eighth inning off
reliever Will Smith broke a 1-1 tie and ruined what had been a
stellar start by former Rays pitcher Matt Garza.
Cobb (16-6) outlasted Garza to win his fifth straight decision and
the Rays (53-54) have won 11 of their last 12 games, while Milwaukee
fell to 59-49.

Mariners 5, Indians 2
Mike Zunino doubled and homered, Dustin Ackley had three hits, and
right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma pitched seven strong innings as the
Seattle Mariners beat the Cleveland Indians 5-2.
Iwakuma (9-5) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits
for the Mariners (55-51), who snapped a six-game losing streak at
Progressive Field.

Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 2
Toronto Blue Jays rookie Marcus Stroman threw seven innings and
allowed one run to lead the Blue Jays past Boston 4-2.
Anthony Gose hit a two-run double in the fourth inning to put the
Blue Jays (58-50) ahead for good.

Marlins 3, Nationals 0
Right fielder Giancarlo Stanton drove in two runs, and right-hander
Henderson Alvarez outdueled Stephen Strasburg, as the streaking
Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 3-0.
Alvarez tossed seven scoreless innings, while Strasburg gave up one
over seven, as the Marlins (53-53) won a season-best six games in a
row and nine of their past 10.

White Sox 11, Tigers 4
Jose Abreu blasted his Major League-leading 31st homer during a
seven-run, seventh-inning outburst, and drove in four runs as the
Chicago White Sox overpowered the Detroit Tigers 11-4.
The Chicago first baseman extended his hitting streak to 18 games
with a fourth-inning single prior to his two-run shot.
The Tigers fell to 57-46 with their fourth loss in a row.

Reds 3, Diamondbacks 0
Mike Leake pitched seven shutout innings and third baseman Todd
Frazier went 2-for-4 with an RBI, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a
3-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Cincinnati (53-53) won for just the second time in 11 games since the
All-Star break. The Reds entered Tuesday's game batting .171 since the
break.

Phillies 6, Mets 0
Left-hander Cole Hamels concluded an impressive July by throwing eight
shutout innings, and second baseman Chase Utley crushed a grand slam
into the second deck in the seventh inning to break open the
Philadelphia Phillies' 6-0 win over the New York Mets.
The Phillies (47-60) won for the fourth time in six games.
The Mets (51-56) had a two-game winning streak snapped as they failed to
move within three games of .500 for the first time since June 4.

Cubs 4, Rockies 3 (16 innings)
Catcher John Baker pitched a scoreless top of the 16th inning, and he
scored the winning run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly as the
Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies in a game that ended on Wednesday
morning.
The Cubs loaded the bases in the bottom of the 16th against Rockies
left-hander Tyler Matzek (2-5) and finally ended a marathon game on a
fly to right by shortstop Starlin Castro.
The game, which lasted six hours, 27 minutes, set club records in terms
of duration for each team.

Dodgers 8, Braves 4
Matt Kemp homered twice and drove in four runs, sparking the Los Angeles
Dodgers to a victory over the Atlanta Braves.
The right fielder, who went 3-for-4, guided the Dodgers (60-47) to their
first four-game winning streak of the season and a win over the Braves
(58-49) in their first meeting since Los Angeles captured last season's
NL Division Series.
Yasiel Puig went 4-for-5 with a double and a triple.

Pirates 3, Giants 1
Third baseman Josh Harrison led off the game with a home run, and
left-hander Francisco Liriano won his second consecutive start with
seven four-hit innings, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a victory over
the San Francisco Giants.
In winning for the eighth time in 11 games since the All-Star break, the
Pirates (57-49) improved to a season-best eight games over .500 and
moved past the Giants (57-50) in the National League wild-card
standings.
The loss was a season-worst sixth in a row for the Giants.

Yankees 12, Rangers 11
The New York Yankees rallied from a three-run deficit then held on for a
victory over the Texas Rangers when Rangers slugger Adrian Beltre flied
out with the bases loaded for the final out in the ninth.
The teams combined for 23 runs and 27 hits. The Yankees (55-51) scored
seven times in the sixth inning to take control.
Yankees left fielder and leadoff man Brett Gardner hammered the Rangers
(42-65), going 4-for-5 while hitting two doubles, a home run and a
single.
Padres 3, Cardinals 1
Yangervis Solarte hit his second homer in seven games as a Padre,
leading San Diego to a victory over the St Louis Cardinals.
The third baseman drove in a run in all but one of his seven starts
since the Padres acquired him in a July 22 trade that sent third baseman
Chase Headley to the New York Yankees.
