Therrien guided the Canadiens to the Eastern Conference
finals. The team is 75-42-13 in the past seasons under Therrien.
The new contract begins in the 2015-16 season and runs through
2018-19.
Therrien, 50, had one more year left on his contract.
"Michel is an accomplished and experienced coach who has
instilled a culture of hard work in our organization while
helping develop our young players," general manager Marc
Bergevin said in a statement. "Michel and his coaching staff
work in a unique and demanding hockey market and the team's
success over the last two seasons are a reflection of their
excellent work. This decision reflects our desire for stability
and consistency within our hockey operations department."
After a first stint coaching the Canadiens, Therrien coached the
Pittsburgh Penguins for three-plus seasons. He returned to
Montreal for a second stint and led the team to a division title
in the 2012-13 season.
