[June 27, 2014]  LINCOLN - Friday evening dozens of cars lined up throughout the evening in front of the Lincoln American Legion Post to grab a bite to go. The occasion was the annual chicken dinner drive thru hosted by the Lincoln Park District.

The Park District hosts the dinner each year as a fundraiser to help support the 4th of July Fireworks program held at the Park District.

In spite of the wind picking up and the possible threat of rain, volunteers were out in full force, scooping up baked beans, potato salad, dinner rolls, and of course, gigantic pieces of freshly fried chicken cooked by members of the American Legion.

Once again this year, the Park District with a little help from the city of Lincoln have a great day planned to celebrate our Nation’s independence.

The celebration will begin Friday morning at 10 a.m. with the Old-fashioned Children’s Walking Parade. Kids and grown-ups are invited to come participate in the parade. Dogs are also welcome. Bicycles are also allowed. Motorized vehicles will not be permitted with the exception of motorized wheelchairs. Everyone is encouraged to show their patriotic spirit by decorating their bicycles, pets, and themselves.

The parade will begin on the south side of Scully Park on Decatur Street. The route will then move south on South McLean to Wyatt Avenue. The group will then walk from to the Park District at 1400 Railer Way.

At the park district, there will be refreshments and a time of giving out prizes.

At 11 a.m. the annual water balloon fight with the city of Lincoln Fire Department will take place on the front lawn.

Later in the evening, crowds will gather at the park district once again, for the annual fireworks display. Music will be provided by D.J. Kevin Curry starting at 7:30 p.m. The fireworks will kick-off with a presentation of the American Flag by a color guard. As dusk passes into twilight, the fireworks will begin.

In addition to good music, there will also be food concessions at the Park District. Everyone is invited to bring their lawn chairs or blankets, enjoy the fresh air, some great music and food, and, of course, a spectacular fireworks display.
