[April 23, 2014]  ELKHART — Enjoy the spectacular wildflowers and migratory birds on Elkhart Hill this weekend.

The Elkhart Historical Society has scheduled Wildflower Nature Walks for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. There will also be an additional date of May 3 at 10 a.m. Walkers will depart from 103 Gov. Oglesby St. in downtown Elkhart.

Everyone on the Wildflower Nature Walks will receive a wildflower "bingo" card to learn the names of the flowers and keep track of the beautiful wildflowers they see on Elkhart Hill. Each outing will last approximately 90 minutes.

The outing will be on foot, so walkers should dress for the weather (rain or shine), wear good walking shoes and bring insect repellent.

Master Gardeners in Macon, Sangamon-Menard, McLean, Peoria and Logan counties can obtain continuing education credit for the walk. Participants should contact their Master Gardener coordinator directly for credit.

The cost for the April tours is $10 for adults and $7.50 for children 12 and younger. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost for May 3 is $20, which includes lunch at the Wild Hare Café in Elkhart. Registration is limited to 15 people per walk. To register, mail the online, printable form (PDF) at http://www.elkharthistoricalsociety.org/ to the Elkhart Historical Society address. Private tours for 10 or more can be reserved by calling Gillette Ransom at 217-947-2238.

Walkers will enjoy looking for the migratory birds, guided by three ornithologists who are very familiar with the Elkhart Hill habitat and the birds that pass through every spring. The Bird Watcher Walks are a perfect opportunity for a spring family event.

The outing will be on foot, so walkers should dress for the weather (rain or shine), wear good walking shoes and bring insect repellent. And don't forget the binoculars. The walks will last approximately 90 minutes.

The cost is $10 for adults and $7.50 for children 12 and younger. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is limited to 15 people per walk. To register, mail the online, printable form (PDF) at http://www.elkharthistoricalsociety.org/ to the Elkhart Historical Society address.

Don't give up on spring. Make plans to join the nature walks on Elkhart Hill.
