Bats Flat in 2-0 Loss to Wichita State

[May 16, 2014]  NORMAL - Illinois State (30-19, 10-9 MVC) was shut out for the second time in four games, falling 2-0 to Wichita State (27-26, 11-8 MVC) Thursday night at Duffy Bass Field. Redbird hitters mustered three hits and drew one walk in the defeat.

Illinois State pitching tallied eight strikeouts in the loss. Dan Savas worked three scoreless innings with three strikeouts for a no-decision and Brock Stewart fired a career-best five scoreless innings with five strikeouts. David Suarez (3-2) allowed two runs in the ninth inning for the loss. A.J. Ladwig pitched seven scoreless for a no-decision for Wichita State and Aaron LaBrie (5-2) tossed the final two for the win.

Wichita State threatened in the first inning but did not score versus Savas. The Shockers put two on with one out, but Savas retired Dayne Parker and Chase Simpson to end the threat. WSU loaded the bases with one out in the third inning, before Savas induced a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat.

Ladwig was perfect for 4.1 innings before Stewart knocked a one-out single to give Illinois State its first base runner of the contest.

Stewart worked perfect innings in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth frames.

Wichita State scored a pair of runs on three hits in the ninth inning to secure the win.

The series continues Friday night with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch from Duffy Bass Field.
