[May 29, 2014]  MOUNT PULASKI - Brett Huff was the hitting hero for the Mount Pulaski Toppers Thursday afternoon in Pawnee as they defeated Central High of Camp Point by a score of 3-1 in sectional play.

The Toppers trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Blake Collier led off the Toppers sixth inning with a double but was unable to advance on a bunt by Jordan Luczaj. Luczaj was out on a close play at first with Michael Lowery due up next. Lowery followed with a bloop hit to center which fell just beyond the reach of the centerfielder and second baseman. Clean-up hitter Beau Collier singled to score his brother Blake with the tying run for the Toppers. Matthew Amidon hit a fielder's choice advancing both runners over and setting the stage for sophomore Brett Huff. With two outs Huff smacked a beautiful line drive to left field to put the Toppers on top 3-1.

Late in the game this would be all the run support starting pitcher Michael Lowery needed. While Lowery shut down the Panthers in the seventh inning much to the delight of the Mount Pulaski fans, it's worth mentioning the Toppers played some outstanding defense.

Centerfielder Matthew Amidon's fantastic catches saved the day more than once for Lowery. Meanwhile freshman Eli Griesheim handled every play at second base like an experienced veteran.

In the end Lowery (8-1) allowed 4 hits while striking out 4 batters and walking one.

The Toppers (13-11) will play for the sectional championship in Pawnee on Saturday at 10 am against Griggsville-Perry.

Griggsville-Perry was a 1-0 winner over host Pawnee.
