- October 14, 2014. To assist Medicare-eligible individuals
regarding their Medicare insurance options, Illinois Department on
Aging (IDoA) Director John K. Holton, Ph.D., today announced free
counseling assistance is available. Medicare Open Enrollment starts
tomorrow, October 15, and runs until December 7. The department’s
Senior Health Insurance Program, (SHIP), provides free counseling

- October is Residents’ Rights month, as started in 1981 by the
National Consumer Voice for Quality Long Term Care to highlight the
importance of resident focused care. In keeping with this year’s
theme “Better Staffing: They Key to Better Care”, Illinois
Department on Aging (IDoA) Director John K. Holton, PhD., is
encouraging people to become educated about long term care. In
addition to providing services for older adults to remain living in
their homes, IDoA also serves residents living in long term care

Encourages people to create a
Secure "my Social Security" account to abtain their statement
online, anytime
SPRINGFIELD
- Carolyn W. Colvin, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, has
announced the agency will resume the periodic mailing of Social
Security Statements--once every five years for most workers--while
encouraging everyone to create a secure my Social Security account

announces start of LIHEAP Winter Energy Assistance Program
Application period open for seniors,

- The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO)
has announced that seniors and people with disabilities can now
begin applying for winter heating assistance through the Low Income
Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Under LIHEAP, utility bill
payments are made on behalf of certain low-income households
