Millikin got its only goal of the game in the 11th minute when
Zach Solorio (Elk Grove Village, Elk Grove H.S.) put back a
rebounded shot by Oliver Czopek (Oswego, Oswego East H.S.).
The Big Blue made that goal standup with some solid defense.
Augustana out shot Millikin 15-5, but the Big Blue goalkeeper Daniel
Sinclair (Peoria, Richwoods H.S.) turned back all of scoring
opportunities recording four saves.
It will be Millikin’s first trip to the conference tournament since
2001. Millikin will play at CCIW Champion Wheaton on Wednesday,
November 5 at 7 p.m.
Millikin kept its playoff hopes alive with a 3-2 overtime win at
North Central College in Naperville, Illinois on October 29.
Freshman Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, H.S.) was the Millikin offensive
hero scoring the game tying goal in the 83rd minute to make it 2-2
and the game winning goal three minutes and 45 seconds into the
overtime period. Sinclair had six saves in goal for Millikin.
Millikin Volleyball Splits Four Games
The 19th ranked Millikin volleyball team split a pair of games
played on November 1 at the Washington University-St. Louis
Invitational on November 1.
Millikin opened the day with a 3-0 win over Westminster College
(25-18, 25-22, 25-20). Senior Audrey Krajec (West Salem, Edwards
County H.S.) led Millikin with 18 kills and eight digs. Senior Jade
Becker (Mt. Zion, H.S.) had nine kills and five blocks. Christina
Capuani (Addison, Addison Trail H.S.) had a team high 13 digs.
The Big Blue lost to #5 Washington University-St. Louis 3-0 (25-18,
25-19, 25-22). Krajec had 15 kills with Becker recording nine kills
and three blocks.
Millikin dropped a tight match to Hendrix College 3-2 at the
Washington University-St. Louis Invitational on October 31. It was a
back-and-fourth match with Hendrix winning the first set 25-23, but
the Big Blue rallying to take set two 26-24. The Warriors bounced
back to take the third set 25-22, but Millikin answered winning the
fourth set 25-19. Hendrix took the fifth and deciding set 15-10.
Freshman Alora Goodey (Lincoln, H.S.)
led Millikin with 15 kills. Krajec had 13 kills, 15 digs and four
blocks. Capuani led the Big Blue with 29 digs. Erin Syversen (Pewuakee,
Wis., Waukesha West H.S.) had 17 digs and 10 kills while Geena
Mancuso (Naperville, Neuqua Valley H.S.) added 16 digs. Becker had a
team high five blocks.
Becker was named to the All-Tournament team.
Millikin escaped an upset bid from Illinois Wesleyan with a 3-2 win
on October 29 in Bloomington, Illinois. Millikin won the first set
25-21, but the Titans took the next two sets 27-25 and 25-19.
Millikin battled back to take the fourth and fifth sets 25-19 and
15-8.
Krajec led Millikin with 19 kills. Goodey and Syversen each had 11
kills. Syversen added a team high 16 digs and three service aces.
Goodey had a .474 hitting percentage. Alicia Thompson (Decatur,
MacArthur H.S.) led Millikin with 29 set assists.
Millikin is now 29-7 on the season. Millikin will host Elmhurst on
November 5 in the regular season finale. The Big Blue will play in
the CCIW Tournament on November 7-8 at Carthage College in Kenosha,
Wisconsin. The game time and opponent will be announced later this
week.
Millikin Football Loses to Carthage College
A bad second half doomed the Millikin football team as the Big Blue
lost to Carthage College 28-22 at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur,
Illinois on November 1.
Senior running back Justin Brooks (Bloomington, H.S.) led the
Millikin offense with 116 yards rushing. Nick Pippin (Bourbonnais,
Bradley Bourbonnais H.S.) was 17-35-2 passing for 254 yards and two
touchdowns. Brady Cufaude (Pekin, H.S.) led the Big Blue receivers
with 119 yards.

Matt Madrigal (Joliet, Joliet Catholic H.S.) led the Millikin
defenders with 12 tackles.
Millikin will host Elmhurst College on November 8 at 1 p.m.
Millikin Swims Past Illinois College
The Millikin men’s and women’s swimming team swept a dual meet with
Illinois College on October 31 at Millikin’s McIntosh Pool in
Decatur, Illinois.
The Millikin men won 124-42 while the Big Blue women defeated
Illinois College 104-77.
Freshman Sami Battle (Odell, Pontiac H.S.) broke her own school
record in the 50 Yard Freestyle winning the event in a record time
of 24.85.
Freshman Felicity Speirs (Lake Stevens, Wash., H.S.) won two events
taking the 200 Yard Freestyle in 2:07.55 and the 500 Yard Free in
5:41.98.
Junior Shelby Kobs (Byron, H.S.) was also a double event winner for
the Big Blue women winning the 100 Yard Freestyle in 59.09 and the
100 Yard Breaststroke in 1:14.53.
Lauren Stryzek (Oak Forest, H.S.) won the Women’s 200 Yard IM in
2:33.96.
Emily Vana (Elmhurst, York H.S.) won the 100 Yard Butterfly in
1:09.18.
The Big Blue women won both relays taking the 400 Yard IM in 4:29.58
with team members Randi Mehrmann (Milstadt, Belleville West H.S.),
Kobs, Vana and Battle. Speirs, Stryzek, Vana and Battle won the 400
Free Relay in 4:03.64.
In the men’s competition Jeremy Baehler (Wildwood, Mo., Desmet
Jesuit H.S.) and Zak Ellrick (Milford, H.S.) each won two events.
Baehler won the 1000 Yard Freestyle in 11:04.69 and the 500 Yard
Free in 5:12.71. Ellrick won the 50 Yard Freestyle in 24.08 and the
100 Freestyle in 55.92.
Andrew Griffin (Tinley Park, H.S.) won the 200 Yard Freestyle in
2:01.48.
Patrick Lewellyan (Naperville, Benet Academy) won the 200 Yard IM in
2:12.68.
Tyler Via (Honolulu, Hawaii, Maryknoll H.S.) won the 100 Yard
Butterfly in 1:09.39.
Freshman Spencer McGowan (Morton, H.S.) won the 100 Yard Backstroke
in 56.39.
The Millikin men’s 400 Yard Freestyle Relay of Chris O’Grady
(Evergreen Park, H.S.), Ellrick, Baehler and McGowan was victorious
in a time of 3:35.95.
Millikin will host Franklin College and Lincoln College on November
7 starting at 6 p.m.
Millikin Hosts CCIW Cross Country Meet
Millikin University was the host for the 2014 Cross Country
Championships at Decatur's Hickory Point Golf Course on November 1.
Millikin finished in seventh in the women's event and eighth in the
men's race.
The Big Blue's top female finisher was Jamie Michl (Newton, H.S.) in
27th in a time of 23:39.33.
Kenneth Albin (Danville, Bismarck Henning H.S.) was the Millikin
men's top finisher in 44th with a time of 26.55.69.
