During the month of September the students of Northwest School in Lincoln participated in a walk to school program sponsored by the Logan County Department of Public Health, the Healthy Communities Partnership in Logan County, and the school.

Each Wednesday in September students met together and walked to school rather than riding. Students had three safe meeting spots where a teacher awaited to accompany them on their safe and healthy walk to school. Those meeting places were Fifth and College Streets, Eighth and College Street, and 1000 North College near the CVS drug store. Approximately 50 students participated in the weekly program.

The program, designed to raise awareness for healthy activities was a pilot program for Northwest, made possible through a grant from the LCDPH. The health department received the grant through the Illinois Department of Public Health “We Choose Health” program.

On Wednesday of this week, the students once again made the trek to school in observance of International Walk to School Day. Emily Hauter, Health Educator for the LCDPH was on hand to take group pictures of the kids at their meeting spots.

The LCDPH and Healthy Communities Partnership strive to promote healthy lifestyles in our community with the goal of making Lincoln and Logan County one of the healthiest communities in the country.
