The Baltimore Orioles and shortstop J.J. Hardy have finalized a three-year extension worth $40 million. The deal also include a fourth-year option.

Hardy was expected to generate a lot of interest from numerous teams, including the New York Yankees who will have a gaping hole with Derek Jeter's retirement, looking for a quality shortstop.

The 32-year-old Hardy batted .268/.309/.372 with 28 doubles, nine home runs and 52 RBIs this season. He went 3-for-10 with a home run in the American League Division Series as the Orioles swept the Detroit Tigers.

--Chris Tillman will start Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter announced.

The right-handed Tillman will face off against Kansas City Royals right hander James Shield at 8:07 ET Friday.

Tillman got the start against the Tigers in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. He allowed two runs in five innings as the Orioles won the first game on their way to sweeping the Detroit.

In his career, Shields is 11-7 with a 3.52 ERA in 26 starts against the Orioles.

--The Baltimore Orioles will not have the services of slugging first baseman Chris Davis during their American League Championship Series matchup with the Kansas City Royals.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed that Davis, who still has five games left on his 25-game suspension, will not be on the ALCS roster.

Davis was suspended for 25 games for taking Adderall, which is a banned substance.

--Houston Astros hitting coach John Mallee is leaving for the same job with the Chicago Cubs.

Mallee replaces Bill Mueller, who announced earlier this week that he was leaving the Cubs after one season as their hitting coach.

The 45-year-old Mallee is from Chicago and wanted to return to be near family.
