Game roundup: Wild blast Avalanche in opener

 SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Minnesota Wild left winger Zach Parise scored a goal and set up two more as his team made an emphatic season debut, blasting past the Colorado Avalanche 5-0 on Thursday.

Right wingers Jason Pominville and Nino Neiderreiter, and defensemen Jared Spurgeon and Ryan Suter added goals for the Wild, who also got a 16-save shutout from goaltender Darcy Kuemper.

Avalanche goalie Seymon Varlamov stopped 33 of the 38 shots he faced in the opening two periods, giving way to Reto Berra, who made 10 saves in the final 20 minutes.

Minnesota improved to 12-0-2 all-time in home openers and set a franchise record with 48 shots on goal for the game.

Devils 6, Flyers 4

PHILADELPHIA -- Left winger Dainius Zubrus scored the go-ahead goal 7:13 into the third period to lift New Jersey over Philadelphia in their season opener.

Left winger Mike Cammalleri scored two goals, including an empty-netter. Right winger Michael Ryder, center Adam Henrique and left winger Patrik Elias also scored goals for New Jersey.

Right winger Wayne Simmonds scored two goals and centers Claude Giroux and Vincent Lecavalier also had goals for Philadelphia.
 


Blue Jackets 3, Sabres 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Cam Atkinson scored the game-winning goal with 7:15 remaining to lead Columbus to a win in Buffalo.

Right winger Jack Skille and center Artem Anisimov also scored for Columbus while goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 21 saves.

Center Zemgus Girgensons scored the lone goal for Buffalo.

Penguins 6, Ducks 4

PITTSBURGH -- Right winger Pascal Dupuis recorded four points, defenseman Olli Maatta registered three assists and center Sidney Crosby scored two goals as Pittsburgh skated past Anaheim.

Anaheim right winger Corey Perry scored a hat trick of power-play goals in the loss.

Wingers Patric Hornqvist and Blake Comeau scored their first goals for Pittsburgh while center Ryan Kesler scored his first for Anaheim. Center Brandon Sutter also scored for Pittsburgh.

Red Wings 2, Bruins 1

DETROIT -- Wingers Justin Abdelkader and Gustav Nyquist scored to lead Detroit to win over Boston.

Right winger Johan Franzen had two assists for Detroit and goaltender Jimmy Howard stopped 16 shots for Detroit.

Center Patrice Bergeron scored for Boston while netminder Tuukka Rask made 22 saves in the loss.

Montreal 2, Capitals 1 (SO)

WASHINGTON -- A third-period goal by center Tomas Plekanec sent the game into overtime and right winger Brendan Gallagher won it in a five-round shootout, giving Montreal a shootout victory over Washington.
 


Washington winger Andre Burakovsky picked up his first NHL goal in his first NHL game in the opening period.

Washington goaltender Braden Holtby made 23 saves in the loss while his Canadiens counterpart, Dustin Tokarski, stopped 29 of 30 shots for his first win of the season.

Lightning 3, Panthers 2 (OT)

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay opened the season with an overtime win over Florida as defenseman Victor Hedman scored his team's third power-play goal just 1:11 into the extra period.

Right winger Ryan Callahan and center Tyler Johnson also scored with the extra man for Tampa Bay and goaltender Ben Bishop made 19 saves.

Center Jonathan Huberdeau and defenseman Erik Gudbranson scored for Florida while goaltender Roberto Luongo made 29 saves in the losing effort.

Predators 3, Senators 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Center Craig Smith, defenseman Shea Weber and left winger Eric Nystrom made Peter Laviolette's debut behind the Nashville bench a success as it beat Ottawa in each team's season opener.

Kyle Turris opened the scoring in the second period for Ottawa before Nashville scored three straight in the third to take the lead.

Ottawa pulled within one at 13:48 when right winger Alex Chiasson deflected a slap shot by defenseman Cody Ceci past goaltender Pekka Rinne with Nystrom in the penalty box for boarding.

Goaltender Craig Anderson registered 34 saves for the Senators and Rinne wound up with 18.

Rangers 3, Blues 2

ST. LOUIS -- Rick Nash scored his second goal of the game with 1:50 to play, breaking a tie and giving New York a win in St. Louis in the season opener for both teams.

Center Chris Kreider scored the other goal for New York.

Center Paul Stastny scored 10:22 into the final period for St. Louis, which also got a goal from left winger Jaden Schwartz.

Blackhawks 3, Stars 2 (SO)

DALLAS -- A backhand goal by center Patrick Kane was the clincher in a shootout as Chicago defeated Dallas in the season opener for both teams.

In regulation, Chicago got the first goal by defenseman Duncan Keith with 44 seconds remaining in the opening period.

Dallas defenseman Trevor Daley whistled a slap shot home for a power-play goal to make it 1-1 in the second before Dallas center Cody Eakin and Chicago center Patrick Sharp traded goals in regulation.



Flames 5, Oilers 2

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Led by a hat-trick from left winger Mason Raymond, Calgary rolled into Rexall Place and spoiled Edmonton's opening ceremony on a night when it paid tribute to its 1984 Stanley Cup championship team.

Center Jiri Hudler and defenseman TJ Brodie also scored for the Flames.

Left wingers Ted Purcell and Taylor Hall scored for Edmonton.

Jets 6, Coyotes 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Right winger Blake Wheeler scored two goals 15 seconds apart during a first-period barrage, helping Winnipeg beat Arizona in the season opener for both teams.

Center Bryan Little had two goals and left winger Dustin Byfuglien and defenseman Mark Stuart ass goals for Winnipeg

Goaltender Ondrej Pavelec made 26 saves in his fifth straight victory against Arizona, which got goals from left winger Mikkel Boedker and center Martin Hanzal .
