[October 18, 2014]  Oct 17 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Friday's National Hockey League games.

Red Wings 4, Maple Leafs 1

Henrik Zetterberg had four assists and Johan Franzen scored two goals as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1.

The Red Wings built a 3-0 lead in the second period thanks to the efforts of Zetterberg and Franzen.

Franzen did not return after leaving the game with a lower-body injury with four minutes left in the second period.

Canucks 2, Oilers 0

The Vancouver Canucks maintained their perfect start to the season and inflicted another defeat on the reeling Edmonton Oilers, who lost their fifth straight in their worst start to a season.



The Oilers played a solid first period, but could not find a way past Vancouver goaltender Ryan Miller.

Vancouver right winger Radim Vrbata broke the deadlock in the second period and Daniel Sedin sealed the victory by scoring an empty net goal in the final minute.

Blue Jackets 3, Flames 2

The Columbus Blue Jackets took a three-goal lead but had to hold on to beat the visiting Calgary Flames.

Jack Skille, Ryan Johansen and Matt Calvert scored for the Blue Jackets, while the Flames scored both of their goals in the third period courtesy of Mason Raymond and rookie right winger Josh Jooris, who made his NHL debut.

Panthers 1, Sabres 0

Goalie Roberto Luongo made 26 saves to lead the Florida Panthers to road win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Sean Bergenheim scored the only goal of the game in the second period and the Panthers held on to post their first victory in four games this season.

Luongo has shut out Buffalo in his past three appearances against them -- twice with Florida and once with Vancouver.

Predators 2, Jets 0

Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne stopped 31 shots for his first shutout of the season and the Predators spoiled the Winnipeg Jets' home opener with a road victory.

Rinne looked determined to return to form as one of the league's premier puck-stoppers as he helped the Predators remain unbeaten after four games.

Ducks 2, Wild 1

Anaheim right winger Corey Perry pushed the game-winning goal past Darcy Kuemper with 8:22 remaining as the Ducks beat the Minnesota Wild.
