[October 21, 2014]  DECATUR - Millikin Volleyball Scores Four More Wins - The #21 Millikin volleyball team improved to 22-5 last week picking up an important CCIW win and three victories in tournament play.

The Big Blue went 3-1 at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Tournament played on Oct. 17-18 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

On Saturday, Millikin knocked of Eau Claire 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15). Audrey Krajec (West Salem, Edwards County H.S.) had 19 kills and 13 digs. Sara Travis (Schaumburg, H.S.) had 12 kills. Christina Capuani (Addison, Addison Trail H.S.) had a team high 19 digs. Jenna Hilgers (Mason City, Illini Central H.S.) had 29 assists and Alicia Thompson (Decatur, MacArthur H.S.) added 23.

In its second match on Saturday, Millikin defeated Northwestern (Minnesota) 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-16). Krajec led Millikin with 16 kills and 12 digs. Capuani had a team high 13 digs.
Hilgers had 20 assists with Thompson adding 15.

On Friday night, Millikin lost to #12 ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15). Krajec had team highs in kills and digs for Millikin with 14 kills and 20 digs. Jade Becker (Mt. Zion, H.S.) added 11 kills. Capuani had 17 digs while Erin Syversen (Pewaukee, Wisconsin, Waukesha West H.S.) had 15. Hilgers had 31 set assists.



Millikin rallied to win its second match of the night defeating Minnesota-Morris 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-16). Krajec again led the way with 10 kills and 10 digs. Hilgers had Thompson each had 15 assists.

Krajec’s performance earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

The Big Blue defeated Augustana College 3-1 in a key CCIW match-up at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Illinois on October 14. In leading the Big Blue to victory, Krajec became the all-time career kills leader in school history with 1,980.

Augustana took the first set 25-21 before the Big Blue rallied to win 25-21, 25-20 and 25-12.

Krajec had 16 kills and 11 digs for the Big Blue. Krajec has 388 kills on the season and surpassed Kelsey England’s mark of 1,978 career kills.

Travis had a solid game for the Big Blue with 14 kills and three blocks. Hilgers had 48 set assists. Capuani led the Big Blue in digs with 23 followed by Geena Mancuso (Naperville, Waubonsie Valley H.S.) with 17.

Millikin will travel to North Central on October 21 before returning home for the Linda Slagell Classic on October 24-25.


Big Blue Football Falls to #11 Wheaton

The Millikin football team lost to 11th ranked Wheaton College 28-3 on October 18 at Frank M. Lindsay Field.

The Big Blue stayed in the game with the undefeated Thunder until to fourth quarter when two Wheaton touchdowns put the game out of reach.

Millikin scored early in the second quarter on a 32 yard Chayce Volpert field goal to cut the Wheaton lead to 7-3.

Wheaton gained 396 yards of total offense with Millikin gaining 374 yards.

Nick Pippin (Bourbonnais, Bradley Bourbonnais H.S.) passed for 192 yards on 19-37-1 passing for the Big Blue. Justin Brooks (Bloomington, H.S.) was Millikin's top rusher with 67 yards. Brady Cufaude (Pekin, H.S.) led the Big Blue receivers with six catches for 87 yards.

Matt Madrigal (Joliet, Joliet Catholic H.S.) and Jake Gates (Mattoon, H.S.) led the Millikin defense with 12 tackles each.

Wheaton improves to 6-0, 3-0 while Millikin falls to 2-4, 0-3.

Millikin travels to North Park University in Chicago on Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.


Millikin Cross Country Back In Action

With its recent home meet getting washed out, the Millikin cross country team returned to action today at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh AAE Invitational held at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis. on October 18. The course will be the site of the NCAA Midwest Regional in November.

The meet was a large meet with over 40 teams competing. Six hundred and sixty-four men ran while 559 women took to the course.

The Millikin women finished in 36th place while the Big Blue men were 44th.



Millikin's top female runner was Jamie Michl (Newton, H.S.) finishing in 249th in 24:10. Three Big Blue female runners set personal bests with Alivia Powers (Wapella, Clinton H.S.) running the 6K course in 24:18, which was 14th fastest in Millikin history. Rachel Sapp (Decatur, Meridian H.S.) improved her spot in 23rd all-time with a time of 25:11 and Rachel Breault (St. Anne, Bishop McNamara H.S.) improved her spot in 25th all-time with a time of 25:34.

Millikin's top male runner was Jacob Griffith (Villa Grove, H.S.) with a time of 28:18 for 432nd place.

Millikin will host the CCIW Championships on November 1 at the Hickory Point Golf Course.
