[October 24, 2014]  Oct 24 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Thursday's National Hockey League games.

Islanders 3, Bruins 2

Former Bruins Johnny Boychuk and Chad Johnson returned to Boston with their new team and helped the New York Islanders to victory.

Boychuk, the long-time Bruins defenseman traded to New York before the start of the season, played a strong game and Johnson, last year's backup Boston goaltender, stopped 30 shots as the Islanders ended a two-game losing streak and improved to 5-2.

To make things worse for the Bruins, defenseman and captain Zdeno Chara was lost in the first period to a reported knee injury.

Justin Abdelkader scored with 43.5 seconds left in overtime to complete a comeback from a two-goal deficit and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Abdelkader scored from the slot in the extra period after the Red Wings scored twice in two minutes late in the third period, with goalie Jimmy Howard pulled for an extra attacker, to tie the game.

Kings 2, Sabres 0

Jonathan Quick became the all-time leader in shutouts for the Los Angeles Kings, blanking the Buffalo Sabres.

Quick stopped all 29 shots he faced to surpass Rogie Vachon's mark of 32 shutouts.

Center Jeff Carter had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who won their fifth in a row and dealt the Sabres (1-7-0) their fourth consecutive loss.

Minnesota goalie Darcy Kuemper delivered his third shutout in four starts and the Wild blanked the Arizona Coyotes.
