The Reds were hoping that Bailey could avoid surgery through a
strength and conditioning program and a platelet-rich plasma
injection, but the tendon was not healing, Reds trailer Paul Lessard
said.
The hope now is that Bailey will be recovered from the surgery in
time to participate in spring training next year. Former Reds
reliever Jonathan Broxton had a similar surgery last August and
missed only the first week of the 2014 season.
Bailey, who has two career no-hitters, finished the 2013 season with
a 9-5 record and a 3.71 ERA with 124 strikeouts in 145 innings
spanning 23 starts.
Before the start of the 2014 season, Bailey signed a six-year, $105
million contract with the Reds.
--Former Biogenesis of America clinic owner Anthony Bosch will plead
guilty to selling performance-enhancing drugs to major league
players when he is back in a federal court on Oct. 16.
Bosch' attorney, Guy Lewis, told a U.S. District Court judge that
his client will continue to cooperate with the probe that involves
suspended New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez
has not been charged.
"By agreeing to plead guilty, Tony Bosch acknowledges his mistake in
judgment -- a mistake for which he is truly sorry," Lewis, said in a
statement. "He is doing everything within his power to make amends,
and to be no longer a part of the problem but a part of the
solution."
--Left-hander Jorge De La Rosa agreed to a two-year, $25 million
contract extension with the Colorado Rockies.
De La Rosa, 33, was scheduled to become a free agent at the end of
the season. He was placed on waivers before the Aug. 31 deadline,
but the Rockies pulled him back when he was claimed.
De La Rosa has a 4.26 ERA and 13-0 record in 154 2/3 innings this
season. He is 9-2 with a 3.19 ERA this year at Coors Field, and
44-15 with a 4.03 ERA lifetime.

--The New York Yankees are expected to offer general manager Brian Cashman
an extension, despite the likelihood that the team will miss the
postseason again.
Multiple reports indicate the top brass of the Yankees is satisfied with
Cashman's efforts to upgrade the team. Cashman made in-season deals that
brought pitcher Brandon McCarthy, infielder/outfielder Martin Prado and
third baseman Chase Headley to New York.
Cashman, whose contract expires at the end of the year, has been on the
job for 17 years
--Hoping to boost their playoff run, the St. Louis Cardinals called up
slugging first baseman Xavier Scruggs. Scruggs will join the team and is
expected to make his major league debut when the Cardinals play the
Brewers in Milwaukee.
The Cardinals, who lead the National League Central Division by three
games over Pittsburgh, were going to let Scruggs participate in Triple-A
Memphis' postseason action, but first baseman Matt Adams' struggles
prompted Thursday's move.
Scruggs, 26, was hitting .286 with 21 homers at Memphis.
