"Ron Washington informed us today that he has chosen to resign as
Rangers manager in order to turn his full attention to addressing an
off-the-field personal matter," general manager Jon Daniels said in
a statement. "Out of respect for Ron's privacy, the Rangers will
leave any comment on the details to him."
The club named bench coach Tim Bogar as interim manager.
Washington was named manager of the Rangers in 2007. He guided the
team to the World Series in 2010-2011 and finished with a 664-611
mark.
The 62-year-old Washington had one year left on his contract. The
Rangers have compiled the worst record in the majors at 53-87.
---San Diego Padres infielder Everth Cabrera was arrested Wednesday
morning in San Diego for driving under the influence of marijuana.
U.S. Border Patrol agents initially stopped Cabrera near a freeway
checkpoint in San Diego, sensed a problem and called in the
California Highway Patrol. After deputies arrived, they arrested
Cabrera on suspicion of DUI.
Cabrera was taken to a station, where blood was drawn. He was then
released to his mother-in-law, TMA reported. The 27-year-old is
currently on the disabled list with a strained hamstring and it's
uncertain whether he'll return to play for the Padres before the end
of the season.
---The Arizona Diamondbacks fired general manager Kevin Towers.
The team said that Towers has been offered a new position in the
front office and is evaluating the opportunity.
Towers, 52, had been the team's general manager since September
2010. Arizona has baseball's third-worst record at 59-81 and is 19
games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West
entering Friday despite a franchise-record $112.3 million payroll.

---The Cleveland Indians activated right fielder David Murphy from the
disabled list and promoted shortstop Justin Sellers from Triple-A
Columbus.
Murphy has been on the 15-day DL with a strained right oblique since
Aug. 10. He is batting .262 on the year with 21 doubles, seven home runs
and 55 RBIs in 109 games. He has spent the last two days rehabbing with
Columbus.
Sellers begins his third stint with Cleveland in 2014, his first since
May 27. He has spent the majority of the season in Columbus where he
batted .254 with three homers and 40 RBIs in 102 games.
