[September 08, 2014]  Sept 7 (The Sports Xchange) - The NFL will not charge the Dallas Cowboys for tampering stemming from a phone conversation between Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones, ESPN reported Sunday.

The phone conversation took place on June 7 and was reported by ESPN while it profiled Jones.

According to the report, Jones asked Cowboys attorney Jason Cohen to call the Vikings after the story came out. Cohen clarified that a third party had handed Jones the phone before a concert in AT&T Stadium and Peterson was on the line.

A Vikings executive told Jones the team would not file a complaint to the NFL. The league agreed not to pursue a tampering charge.

For the first time in his NFL career, quarterback Cam Newton was listed as inactive because of injury, missing the start for the Carolina Panthers in the regular-season opener at Tampa Bay.

Newton sat out the game to rest his ribs to be healthy for the rest of the season, giving veteran Derek Anderson, a backup for Carolina since Newton was the first overall pick of the 2011 draft, his first start in four years.

Newton, who had offseason ankle surgery, suffered two cracked ribs and sat out the preseason finale.

Rookie outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney left his NFL debut with the Houston Texans in the second quarter with a knee injury and did not return.

The team announced Clowney suffered a knee injury. He posted one tackle in the game, tracking down Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson on an end-around for a 9-yard loss.

Clowney, the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, missed time in the preseason because of a concussion after recovering from June hernia surgery.

Pro Bowl inside linebacker Derrick Johnson is likely out for the season with what the Kansas City Chiefs believe to be a ruptured right Achilles tendon suffered in the game against the Tennessee Titans.

Late in the first half, Kansas City's leading tackler crumbled to the turf without being touched and was taken off the field on a motorized cart.

Adding to the Chiefs' physical pain was another Achilles tendon injury by starting defensive end Mike DeVito that also appears to be season-ending.

Tedford finally shed light on the medical procedure that kept him out for the fourth and final preseason game and away from the team facility for more than two weeks. Tedford said he had coronary angioplasty to have two stents placed in an artery near his heart.

Changes to the NFL's drug policy have been discussed and deadlines to finalize proposals are coming starting this week, according to ESPN.

Some NFL owners have expressed frustration with the number of drug-related suspensions and how the league has handled them.

A proposal by the NFL and the players' union is due Tuesday and another one a week from Wednesday, according to the report.

One obstacle that the NFL and players' union is reportedly facing is that the league wants teams to deactivate players with pay if they are arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
