[September 09, 2014]  LINCOLN - On Saturday, the Lincoln College Volleyball team hosted Illinois Valley Community College. The two teams met ten days earlier in LC's season opener which the Lady Lynx won in four sets.

IVCC came in looking for revenge and this time pushed LC to a fifth set. Lincoln took set one 25-21, but in set two Illinois Valley turned the tables and won 20-25.

The third set was a back and forth affair in which Lincoln ran out of substitutions in the end, yet still manage to pull off a 25-22 win.

In set four, it appeared Lincoln was in control of the match after grabbing a 20-15 lead, but the Lady Eagles ran off seven points in a row and eventually took the set 23-25.

In the fifth and deciding set, neither team was able to gain much of an advantage until Lincoln put together a late charge behind the serve of sophomore libero Mariana Rogers (Munster, IN).

With the score tied at 9-9, Rogers served up four points in a row, aided by two kills from sophomore leftside hitter Destiny Adkins (Metamora) and two IVCC hitting errors. After a Rogers service error and a sideout by Lincoln, sophomore setter Jessa Coker (Macomb) set up freshman middle hitter Lauren Wendt (Effingham) for a kill down the line to seal the 15-11 victory.

The win improved LC's record to 3-2 on the season.

LC Head Coach Mark Tippett:

"this turned out to be a very exciting and entertaining match. Due to an injury to one of their setters, IVCC was not at full strength when we saw them a week ago.

"This time they were able to play a 6-2 system instead of a 5-1, which meant we were not able to take advantage of the rotations when they had a front row setter like we did during our first meeting.

"Our players stepped up to that challenge, and I was pleased with their effort. We really should have beaten them in four sets, but we just stalled late in set four. It was not due to any one issue, we just lost a few very well played volleys by both teams.

"It was great to see the way our team handled the pressure of a deciding set to 15. When we need to make plays late in that set, our defense toughened up and our hitters were not afraid to take aggressive swings. The win will hopefully boost our confidence if and when we find ourselves in such a spot again this season."

Lincoln will next play on Tuesday afternoon and they host a 4:30 match against the Greenville College JV.
