Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, out of the lineup Tuesday night with left hand inflammation that might have resulted from offseason thumb surgery, could be shut down for the rest of the season.

"He's been getting treatment on it for some time now and as it's probably worsened some; felt like he needs to give this a little bit of a break," Boston manager manager John Farrell said before a game against the Baltimore Orioles in Fenway Park. "There's further information being gathered."

---Injured New York Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka threw approximately 44 pitches in another simulated game Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Tanaka is trying to rehab his injured right elbow. The Yankees want him to test the elbow before the season ends to determine whether he will need Tommy John reconstructive surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament.

Tanaka has been on a rest and throwing regimen for the past few weeks. He last pitched in a game on July 8.

---Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins was diagnosed with a mild hamstring strain Tuesday and is considered day to day, according to manager Ryne Sandberg.

Rollins left Monday night's game when he suffered the injury in the fourth inning. After the game, Rollins said he expected to be out 10 days.

"I'm looking at it day to day," Sandberg said. "So we'll monitor it and check and see. But better than what it looked like (Monday) night."

---The New York Mets promoted outfielder Bobby Abreu from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old Abreu hit .238 in 67 games this season for the Mets before being designated for assignment on Aug. 5. He was re-signed to a minor league deal on Aug. 14.

---Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto, who is on the disabled list with a quadriceps strain, took 25 ground balls on Monday.

He also has hit off a tee and manager Bryan Price said trainers gradually are increasing Votto's workload. But Price said he's still not certain if Votto will play again this season.

Votto has played in just 62 games this season because of injuries.
