Highlights of Tuesday's Major League Baseball games

[September 10, 2014]  Sept 9 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's Major League Baseball games:

Tigers 4, Royals 2

J.D. Martinez and Rajai Davis hit home runs and Max Scherzer gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings as Detroit won its third straight and pulled into a first-place tie with the Kansas City Royals in the American League Central Division.

Scherzer (16-5) walked four but struck out six and gave up seven hits as he worked out of three situations where he had at least two runners on base.

Right-hander Joe Nathan picked up his 30th save for pitching the ninth.

Nationals 6, Braves 4

Adam LaRoche had two early RBI singles and Jayson Werth had an RBI and two runs scored as Washington built an early five-run lead and held on to beat Atlanta for the second straight win in the series.



LaRoche, Washington's first baseman, had an RBI single during a four-run fourth and also drove in a run in the second. Werth, the right fielder, scored after walks in the first and second and had an RBI double in the fourth.

The first-place Nationals are a season-high nine games ahead of the second-place Braves, who have lost six of their last eight games.

Reds 9, Cardinals 5

Devin Mesoraco homered and Mike Leake pitched six strong innings for Cincinnati.

Leake allowed three runs on eight hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

Mesoraco went 2-for-3 with a homer, double and three RBIs, helping Cincinnati snap a six-game losing streak against St. Louis.

Orioles 4, Red Sox 1

Alejandro De Aza hit two homers and drove three runs, Adam Jones added a solo homer, and the surging Orioles won for the 10th time in 13 games.

The Red Sox lost their third game in a row.

Baltimore right-hander Chris Tillman gave one run on six hits over five innings, raising his road record to 8-0.

Angels 9, Rangers 3

Erick Aybar hit a two-run double and Collin Cowgill hit a three-run triple as the Angels won for the six straight time.

The Angels held a slim 2-1 lead for much of the game, but a seven-run outburst in the eighth inning thwarted any chance of a comeback.

The Rangers lead the league with 90 losses.

A's 11, White Sox 2

Josh Donaldson set a career high for hits by going 5-for-6 and drove in four, and Jon Lester threw eight strong innings for Oakland.

Lester allowed two runs on seven hits while posting his first win in five starts.

Oakland (81-63) finally looked like a team bound for the playoffs again after losing nine of their previous 11 games.

Mets 2, Rockies 0

Jacob deGrom continued his summer-long stretch of dominant pitching, throwing a career-high eight shutout innings and retiring the final 16 batters he faced for New York.

DeGrom allowed just three hits and walked none while striking out nine as he improved to 8-2 with a 1.75 ERA in 13 starts since June 21. He leads National League rookies in ERA (2.62), strikeouts (121) and innings pitched (127 1/3).

Mets third baseman David Wright will be shut down for the rest of the season with a sore left shoulder.

Phillies 4, Pirates 3

Rookie third baseman Maikel Franco delivered a two-out RBI single to snap a tie in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Phillies put a stop to the Pirates' four-game winning streak.

Backup shortstop Freddy Galvis went 3-for-3 with three runs scored for Philadelphia.

Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon saved his 36th game with a scoreless ninth inning to lower his ERA to 1.61.

Twins 4, Indians 3

Minnesota scored all four runs on four hits in the fourth inning against Cleveland.

Right fielder Oswaldo Arcia belted a two-run home run, capping Minnesota's big inning.

Blue Jays 9, Cubs 2

Jose Bautista hit a go-ahead three-run double in the seventh inning and Mark Buehrle pitched seven innings to extend Toronto's winning streak to three games.

Buehrle allowed 10 hits and two runs as the left-hander earned his first win since July 30.

Chicago lost its fifth straight game.

Rays 4, Yankees 3

Chris Archer rebounded from a pair of subpar outings and pitched into the seventh as he improved to 5-0 in his career against New York.

First baseman James Loney homered, had an RBI single and had three hits for the Rays, who have won nine of their last 10 games at Yankee Stadium.

Marlins 6, Brewers 3

Casey McGehee and Marcell Ozuna hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning as Miami rallied.

Ozuna was 3-for-3 with two walks, and McGehee went 2-for-4.

Aramis Ramirez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Milwaukee.

Giants 5, Diamondbacks 1

Second baseman Joe Panik recorded the first five-hit game of his career as San Francisco beat Arizona.

Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit pitched a complete-game four-hitter, sending San Francisco to its seventh consecutive home victory.

Padres 6, Dodgers 3

Jedd Gyorko homered, and the San Diego Padres snapped a six-game skid by beating Los Angeles.

The Padres second baseman's 10th home run helped San Diego end a four-game winning streak by the Dodgers.

Astros 2, Mariners 1

Houston Astros shortstop Jonathan Villar's two-out single in the top of the ninth inning drove in the go-ahead run, and the Astros beat Seattle.

Houston right-hander Collin McHugh pitched eight innings of one-run ball. (Editing by Gene Cherry)
