 The Boston Red Sox second baseman sat out Tuesday night in the
middle game of the three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at
Fenway Park because of a left hand injury that he has dealt with for
most of the season, according to manager John Farrell.
"He's aggravated the left hand again by being taken out at second
base on double plays early in the year and mid-year," Farrell said.
"With the exception of sliding head first, Dustin plays the game as
he's wired and that's what makes him the player that he is."
Farrell said an MRI exam was done on Pedroia, and the results
revealed enough inflammation to shut down the second baseman.
Meanwhile, Red Sox infielder-outfielder Brock Holt missed his fifth
straight game because of lightheadedness and dizziness. Third
baseman Will Middlebrooks, who left Tuesday's game because of
illness, was also out.
---Baltimore Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy, who had a cortisone shot
in his lower back on Tuesday, was on target to start one of the
games of Friday's split home doubleheader against the New York
Yankees.
---The Washington Nationals had two regulars out of the starting
lineup Wednesday.
Shortstop Ian Desmond, who came out of the game after five innings
Tuesday, has lower back tightness and third baseman Anthony Rendon
was under the weather.

---The New York Yankees were without left fielder Brett Gardner
(abdominal strain) and infielder-outfielder Martin Prado (hamstring)
on Wednesday.
The Yankees hope to have both in a few days, but manager Joe Girardi
said Prado's injury is the type that would require a DL stint if it
came earlier in the season. New York DH Carlos Beltran was a late
scratch because of right elbow soreness.
