[September 10, 2014]  LINCOLN - Zion Lutheran School held their annual Family Fun Day Saturday on the school campus on the west side of Lincoln. Family Fun Day is held each year just after the new school year begins. The event consists of games for the kids, a fundraising cake and pie auction, and a delicious meal.

Zion Lutheran School was founded in 1975 in the basement of the Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln. The school moved to the current location at 1600 Woodlawn Road in 1979. The school teaches pre-K classes and kindergarten through eighth grade. The pre-K classes draw kids from many of the smaller towns in Logan County.

The Family Fun Day is in its 11th year as one of several events held at the school during the year. The five-member Zion Lutheran School Challenge Committee is tasked with organizing the fundraisers and getting the volunteers necessary to staff each event.

In addition to the Fun Day, the school also holds the very popular pancake breakfast in February and a Vines & Vendors plant sale and craft show in the spring. Tentative plans are currently being made to hold a golf outing for next summer. “The reason for the fundraisers is to raise enough money during the year to help keep the tuition at Zion Lutheran affordable,” said Bonnie Montgomery, Challenge Committee member.

One of the most popular events during the Family Fun Day is the cake and pie auction. Parents and friends of Zion Lutheran donate the sweet treats and auctioneer Mike Maske serves as the official auctioneer. The fast paced event brings laughs and some fast bidding to the Zion Lutheran gym. Over 30 pies and cakes were donated by families of students and friends of the school this year for the auction. “The pie and cake auction brings in the most money for the Fun Day, and it’s a lot of fun,” said Steve Schumacher, principal of Zion Lutheran School.

The Zion Lutheran School student council under the direction of President Carter Robison sells water and soda during the event. The proceeds are then donated to the school and the community. Last year, funds were used to purchase flags for the school.

The meal at the Fun Day is overseen by Joan Dahmm, who serves as the food coordinator. Over 500 meals were served last year. “The pork that goes into the BBQ, sausage that is sold in bulk, and sweet corn are all donated by area farmers to Zion Lutheran,” said Joan.
