[September 13, 2014]  Sept 12 (The Sports Xchange) - Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been indicted on charges of child injury in Texas, according to multiple reports.

According to the NFL Network, Peterson disciplined his son "with a switch" resulting in the indictment. Peterson testified in front of grand jury three weeks ago.

Fox Sports says Peterson has been cooperating with law enforcement officials.

Rusty Hardin, Peterson's attorney, declined comment.

Peterson's status for the Vikings' games against the New England Patriots on Sunday is uncertain. Peterson did not practice on Thursday, but was present at the team's facility on Friday. News of the indictment broke hours after practice ended.

MyFOXHouston said Peterson is being charged with "reckless or negligent injury to a child." Child Protective Services has confirmed they are working on a case involving Peterson.

The NFL Players Association received official confirmation from the NFL that former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice is suspended indefinitely.

The letter, signed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and obtained by ESPN, explains that the league concluded Rice's original two-game suspension for assaulting his then-fiance and now-wife, Janay Palmer, should be indefinite because video released by TMZ Sports on Monday showed Rice in the act of striking her in an Atlantic City hotel casino elevator.

NFLPA spokesman George Attalah told ESPN on Friday that the union is "considering all options" now that it has the letter. The union has three days to inform the league whether it intends to appeal.

Monday's court hearing for San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald has been postponed as police need more time to continue their investigation. McDonald was arrested Aug. 31 on suspicion of domestic violence.

McDonald was accused of hitting his pregnant fiancée. He met with police last week and maintains his innocence.

McDonald has not been formally charged and he has remained on the field for the 49ers. The team's management has cited "due process" in allowing McDonald to continue playing.

"(My) character is, I will not punish somebody until we see evidence that it should be done or before an entire organization, an entire legal, police investigation, shows us something," CEO Jed York told a Bay Area radio station this week.

The Carolina Panthers will continue to allow defensive end Greg Hardy to play until the legal system involving his domestic violence case plays out, head coach Ron Rivera said.

Hardy will start as usual in Sunday's home opener against the Detroit Lions.

The 2013 Pro Bowl selection was found guilty in July by a Mecklenburg County judge of assaulting and threatening ex-girlfriend Nicole Holder. He appealed the verdict and a jury trial has been set for Nov. 17. But Hardy's attorney said the case won't be heard until 2015 because of the court's backload.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon might not be selling cars for very long. Wide receiver Wes Welker could be reinstated too.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that Gordon's year-long suspension will be reduced to eight games once the NFL's new drug policy passes.

The Denver Post said even if Welker's four-game suspension is rescinded it was not certain if the Broncos will activate him for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Because Gordon tested positive in the 2013 league year, the NFL and NFL Players Association have negotiated a settlement that would enable him to get back on the field at the end of October or early November.

Atlanta Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews tried to test his injured ankle at practice, but he was ruled out for week two against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Matthews suffered the left ankle injury in the first half of last week's 37-34 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints. He exited the stadium in a walking boot.

Wide receiver Roddy White was officially listed as probable for Sunday's game at Cincinnati after banging his left knee in the Saints game.

The Washington Redskins officially ruled tight end Jordan Reed out of Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with the hamstring injury that is expected to sideline him for three to four weeks.

CBS and NFL Network, against the backdrop of the Ray Rice controversy, had huge ratings for their Thursday Night Football debut between the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

CBS and NFL Network earned an overnight household rating/share of 13.7/23, an increase of 108 percent from last year's comparable game on NFL Network between the New York Jets and New England Patriots (from 6.6/12).

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Michael Sam is making progress in the short time he has been on the team's practice squad.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli likes what he has seen in practice from Sam.

"He's done some good things," Marinelli said. "The only thing he really gets is some of our individual periods and then he gets some one-on-one rushes on Wednesday, and I think he's gotten a little bit better.

"But it's tougher for a practice squad guy because these other guys here, they're pounding with all week long in terms of fundamentals and game-planning and those things. So it's a little tougher, but he's got movement. I like his quickness and his instincts. He's got really good work habits, so just keep working to develop him."

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed starting defensive end Adrian Clayborn on season-ending injured reserve with a biceps injury and re-signed defensive end Scott Solomon on Friday.
