Local person author’s new book: Olive Boone: Pioneer Woman

[September 13, 2014]  Give your kids (and yourself) a more balanced perspective on American pioneer history! You will be supporting a local author whose work on http://misouriwomen.org/  has developed into this fascinating children’s book. While mainly written for grades 4-6, any U.S. history buff will find this book interesting because the reader is provided a fuller, more accurate view of what life was like on the 1800’s frontier.

Additionally, very seldom does one come across a book that tells history from the female perspective; Olive Boone raised 14 kids in a dirt floor shack, with no electricity or running water and with dangers lurking around every corner. She did all of this alone, and all the while maintaining the family’s farm. Olive Boone married Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone.

The author, Greta Russell, in addition to writing the blog mentioned above, worked for four years as the Director of Interpretations and Collections at the Boone home outside St. Louis, Missouri. She also holds a Master’s degree from the FIT in New York, NY.

Greta Maxheimer Russell is the daughter of Norman and Judith Maxheimer. Greta graduated from Mt. Pulaski High School in 1993.
