[September 19, 2014]  Sept 18 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Thursday's Major League Baseball games.

Mariners 3, Angels 1

First baseman Logan Morrison hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Seattle Mariners a victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

The win narrows the Mariners' (82-70) deficit in the wild-card race to one game behind the Oakland Athletics, who hold the final American League playoff position.

Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez tossed seven scoreless innings and set a personal single-season strikeout record in his no-decision. Hernandez amassed 11 strikeouts, giving him 236 for the season.

The Angels (95-58) rested their starters one night after securing the American League West championship. Nevertheless, Los Angeles put the potential tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth.

Cardinals 3, Brewers 2 (13 innings)

Backup catcher Tony Cruz singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Cardinals edged the Brewers in a crucial contest.

St. Louis (85-68) stayed 2 1/2 games ahead of second-place Pittsburgh in the National League Central while dropping Milwaukee six games back.

The Brewers (79-74) trail the Pirates by 3 1/2 games for the NL's second wild card. They visit Pittsburgh this weekend for a three-game series.

Dodgers 8, Cubs 4

The Los Angeles Dodgers erupted for five runs in the seventh inning and rallied for a victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Second baseman Dee Gordon, who finished 2-for-5, drove in the go-ahead run with a double.

The Dodgers (87-66) snapped a two-game losing streak -- including a 16-2 loss at Colorado on Wednesday -- and increased their lead over the idle San Francisco Giants to 2 1/2 games in the National League West.

Pirates 3, Red Sox 2

Gerrit Cole pitched into the eighth inning for yet another September win, and Starling Marte homered as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Boston Red Sox.

The Pirates swept the three-game series, ran their winning streak to four games and won for the 11th time in their last 13 games while keeping pace in the National League pennant race.

The Pirates are 3 1/2 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for the second wild card and 2 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central.

The Brewers and Cardinals played in St. Louis on Thursday night, and Milwaukee visits Pittsburgh (82-70) for a pivotal three-game series beginning Friday night.

Rangers 7, A's 2

The Texas Rangers played spoilers for the third straight game, beating Oakland to sweep the series and knock the A's out of a tie for the American League's first wild-card playoff spot.

The free-falling A's (83-69) trail the Kansas City Royals by a half-game in the wild-card race and have 10 games to play. They own a one-game lead over Seattle.

Rookie right fielder Jake Smolinski went 4-for-5 with four singles, pacing the Rangers' 15-hit attack. He drove in a run and scored once.

Nationals 6, Marlins 2

The playoff-bound Washington Nationals, seeking to secure home-field advantage throughout the National League postseason, defeated the Miami Marlins.

Left-hander Gio Gonzalez (9-10) went seven innings, allowing two runs for Washington (88-64), which clinched its second NL East title in three years on Tuesday.

Miami (74-78), which is virtually out of the running for a wild-card playoff berth, is still within reach of at least a winning record.

Yankees 3, Blue Jays 2

Chase Headley hit a hard ground ball under first baseman Adam Lind's glove with one out in the bottom of the ninth as the New York Yankees opened Derek Jeter's final week at Yankee Stadium with a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jeter began his final homestand with an infield single to shortstop but was thrown out trying to steal second. He nearly hit a single leading off the fourth, but Jays left fielder Kevin Pillar made a diving, face-first catch on his sinking liner.

Rockies 7, Diamondbacks 6

Wilin Rosario hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the ninth inning to give the Colorado Rockies a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Rosario finished 4-for-5 for the Rockies who climbed out of a 6-1 deficit to earn the win.

Colorado's Justin Morneau went hitless in five at-bats to fall two points behind Josh Harrison (.319) in the National League batting race.

Padres 7, Phillies 3

San Diego Padres left-hander Robbie Erlin held the Philadelphia Phillies to one run on five hits over six innings in his first Major League start since May 17, and Alexi Amarista and Will Venable homered as the Padres defeated Philadelphia.

Amarista, a shortstop, drove in two runs with a homer and a sacrifice fly while going 2-for-3.

Erlin spent most of the summer rehabbing after coming out of his eighth start of the season on May 17 with elbow soreness.

Indians 2, Astros 1 (13 innings)

Mike Aviles delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the 13th inning, lifting the Cleveland Indians to a win over the Houston Astros.

Indians shortstop Jose Ramirez scored both Cleveland runs, including the game-winner after stroking a one-out double to left field off Astros right-hander Sam Deduno (2-6).

Seven relievers combined to work 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the Indians (79-73), including right-hander Cody Allen, who earned his 22nd save.
