Mariners 3, Angels 1
First baseman Logan Morrison hit a three-run home run in the top of
the ninth inning to give the Seattle Mariners a victory over the Los
Angeles Angels.
The win narrows the Mariners' (82-70) deficit in the wild-card race
to one game behind the Oakland Athletics, who hold the final
American League playoff position.
Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez tossed seven scoreless innings
and set a personal single-season strikeout record in his
no-decision. Hernandez amassed 11 strikeouts, giving him 236 for the
season.
The Angels (95-58) rested their starters one night after securing
the American League West championship. Nevertheless, Los Angeles put
the potential tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth.

Cardinals 3, Brewers 2 (13 innings)
Backup catcher Tony Cruz singled home the winning run in the bottom
of the 13th inning as the Cardinals edged the Brewers in a crucial
contest.
St. Louis (85-68) stayed 2 1/2 games ahead of second-place
Pittsburgh in the National League Central while dropping Milwaukee
six games back.
The Brewers (79-74) trail the Pirates by 3 1/2 games for the NL's
second wild card. They visit Pittsburgh this weekend for a
three-game series.

Dodgers 8, Cubs 4
The Los Angeles Dodgers erupted for five runs in the seventh inning
and rallied for a victory over the Chicago Cubs.
Second baseman Dee Gordon, who finished 2-for-5, drove in the
go-ahead run with a double.
The Dodgers (87-66) snapped a two-game losing streak -- including a
16-2 loss at Colorado on Wednesday -- and increased their lead over
the idle San Francisco Giants to 2 1/2 games in the National League
West.

Pirates 3, Red Sox 2
Gerrit Cole pitched into the eighth inning for yet another September
win, and Starling Marte homered as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the
Boston Red Sox.
The Pirates swept the three-game series, ran their winning streak to
four games and won for the 11th time in their last 13 games while
keeping pace in the National League pennant race.
The Pirates are 3 1/2 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for the
second wild card and 2 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in
the NL Central.
The Brewers and Cardinals played in St. Louis on Thursday night, and
Milwaukee visits Pittsburgh (82-70) for a pivotal three-game series
beginning Friday night.

Rangers 7, A's 2
The Texas Rangers played spoilers for the third straight game,
beating Oakland to sweep the series and knock the A's out of a tie
for the American League's first wild-card playoff spot.
The free-falling A's (83-69) trail the Kansas City Royals by a
half-game in the wild-card race and have 10 games to play. They own
a one-game lead over Seattle.
Rookie right fielder Jake Smolinski went 4-for-5 with four singles,
pacing the Rangers' 15-hit attack. He drove in a run and scored
once.

Nationals 6, Marlins 2
The playoff-bound Washington Nationals, seeking to secure home-field
advantage throughout the National League postseason, defeated the
Miami Marlins.
Left-hander Gio Gonzalez (9-10) went seven innings, allowing two
runs for Washington (88-64), which clinched its second NL East title
in three years on Tuesday.
Miami (74-78), which is virtually out of the running for a wild-card
playoff berth, is still within reach of at least a winning record.

Yankees 3, Blue Jays 2
Chase Headley hit a hard ground ball under first baseman Adam Lind's
glove with one out in the bottom of the ninth as the New York
Yankees opened Derek Jeter's final week at Yankee Stadium with a
victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Jeter began his final homestand with an infield single to shortstop
but was thrown out trying to steal second. He nearly hit a single
leading off the fourth, but Jays left fielder Kevin Pillar made a
diving, face-first catch on his sinking liner.

Rockies 7, Diamondbacks 6
Wilin Rosario hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the ninth inning to
give the Colorado Rockies a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Rosario finished 4-for-5 for the Rockies who climbed out of a 6-1
deficit to earn the win.
Colorado's Justin Morneau went hitless in five at-bats to fall two
points behind Josh Harrison (.319) in the National League batting
race.

Padres 7, Phillies 3
San Diego Padres left-hander Robbie Erlin held the Philadelphia
Phillies to one run on five hits over six innings in his first Major
League start since May 17, and Alexi Amarista and Will Venable
homered as the Padres defeated Philadelphia.
Amarista, a shortstop, drove in two runs with a homer and a
sacrifice fly while going 2-for-3.
Erlin spent most of the summer rehabbing after coming out of his
eighth start of the season on May 17 with elbow soreness.

Indians 2, Astros 1 (13 innings)
Mike Aviles delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the 13th inning,
lifting the Cleveland Indians to a win over the Houston Astros.
Indians shortstop Jose Ramirez scored both Cleveland runs, including
the game-winner after stroking a one-out double to left field off
Astros right-hander Sam Deduno (2-6).
Seven relievers combined to work 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the
Indians (79-73), including right-hander Cody Allen, who earned his
22nd save.
