The Arizona Diamondbacks have decided to make former pitcher Dave Stewart an offer to become their next general manger, CBSSports.com reported Wednesday.

Sources close to the team said Arizona selected Stewart after interviewing nine candidates and will try to make a deal with him to replace Kevin Towers, who was fired last Friday.

CBSSports.com said there is no word that a deal is done yet, or even that the offer officially has been made. Stewart has been working as an agent after careers as a starting pitcher, coach and front office executive. To accept an offer to become GM, he would have to give up his agent business.

Stewart currently represents Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, Houston Astros designated hitter Chris Carter and several other major-leaguers.

---Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera entered Wednesday's game batting .405 with six home runs in September while playing with a bone spur in his right ankle.

"He's moving better on it," manager Brad Ausmus said before the game against the Chicago White Sox. "This thing comes and goes and the last five or six days, with the exception of maybe Sunday, he's been moving well on it compared to late August and early September."

---Chicago White Sox third-year manager Robin Ventura isn't on the hot seat despite the team winding down the season in fourth place in the American League Central. He signed a multiyear extension during the winter that runs through at least 2016.

---Los Angeles Angels third baseman David Freese (upper back tightness) was out of the starting lineup Wednesday against the Oakland A's for the second straight game.

The Angels have an off day Thursday, and manager Mike Scioscia said he expects Freese to return to the starting lineup Friday at Seattle.

---Angels right-hander Jered Weaver continued making progress Wednesday in his recovery from the stomach flu and said he expects to make his scheduled start Friday against Seattle.

"I'll be fine for Friday," Weaver said.

---Oakland A's catcher Derek Norris started for the first time since injuring his right shoulder Saturday against Philadelphia during a play at the plate.

Norris had a cortisone injection Sunday, missed that day's game against the Phillies, then was the designated hitter against the Angels on Monday and Tuesday.

---Minnesota Twins first baseman Joe Mauer was not in the lineup after taking a pitch off the right elbow on Tuesday.

Manager Ron Gardenhire said he hopes Mauer will play all four games in Detroit this weekend.

---Washington Nationals center fielder Denard Span was held out of the starting lineup Wednesday after he bruised a knee making a sliding catch on the warning track in the third inning of Tuesday's 4-2 win.

"He banged his knee good," manager Matt Williams said of Span, who entered Wednesday with a league-high 180 hits. "(But) there is no cause for alarm."
