Kirk Gibson is out as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks and bench coach Alan Trammell also was dismissed on Friday.

The moves come less than a day after the Diamondbacks hired Dave Stewart as their new general manager. The Diamondbacks said a search for a new manager will begin immediately.

The 57-year-old Gibson compiled a 353-375 record in more than four seasons as Arizona's manager. In Gibson's first full season, he led the Diamondbacks to the National League West title with a 94-68 regular-season record and was named the NL Manager of the Year. Two 81-81 seasons followed before this year's team dipped to a major-league-worst 63-96 record going into the final weekend of the season.

---One night after Derek Jeter played his final game in Yankee Stadium and ended it in glorious fashion with a walk-off single, the New York Yankees shortstop was not in the lineup against the Boston Red Sox.

Brendan Ryan started at shortstop against the Red Sox on Friday night in Fenway Park in the first game of a season-ending weekend series between the longtime rivals.

Jeter said after Thursday night's game that he would not play shortstop this weekend but only as a designated hitter. He also was available for pinch-hitting duties.

"I don't think I really slept -- maybe a couple of hours," he said before telling the media he never asked for a day off before. "I just couldn't play tonight."

---Bobby Abreu plans to call it a career after 18 seasons. The longtime major leaguer was to make a retirement announcement Friday night, the New York Daily News reported.

Abreu was called up to the major leagues by the New York Mets this month after the team designated him for assignment in early August.

In 2,423 career games, Abreu was one of the most productive hitters in the major leagues. Abreu has a higher on-base percentage (.870) than Paul Konerko (.841) and Derek Jeter (.817), who also are retiring this year. A two-time All-Star, Abreau had 2,469 career hits with 288 home runs, 1,363 RBIs, 1,453 runs and 400 stolen bases while playing for six teams. He ranks 20th in walks and 21st in doubles in baseball history.
