[September 27, 2014]  Sept 26 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Friday's Major League Baseball games.

Royals 3, White Sox 1

The Kansas City Royals will be in the postseason for the first time since 1985 after beating the Chicago White Sox 3-1 on Friday.

Kansas City clinched one of the American League's two wild-card spots and stayed alive in the race for the Central Division, thanks to a Detroit loss that leaves the Royals one game behind the Tigers with two to play.

The Royals scored three times in the first inning against the White Sox and that was all the offense they needed in a victory that ended their 29-year playoff drought.

Twins 11, Tigers 4

Brian Dozier and Oswaldo Arcia each had three RBIs to help the Minnesota Twins beat Detroit and stall the Tigers' drive to a fourth straight AL Central Division title.
 


Rookie right-hander A.J. Achter (1-0) earned his first major league victory in his seventh appearance. He allowed two hits, one being first baseman Miguel Cabrera's 25th home run, which came in the seventh.

A's 6, Rangers 2

Josh Reddick had a home run and three RBIs and the Oakland Athletics moved to the verge of a postseason spot with victory over the Texas Rangers.

Reddick, who went 2-for-4, hit his 12th home run of the season and the Athletics (87-73) remained one game behind Kansas City (88-72) for the first American League wild-card berth.

Mariners 4, Angels 3

The Seattle Mariners needed three home runs and a strong pitching performance from starter Hisashi Iwakuma and four relievers to finish off their first must-win game of the season with a victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Seattle (85-75) stayed alive in the American League wild-card hunt, two games behind Oakland with two games remaining.

The Mariners survived a shaky top of the ninth inning that saw All-Star closer Fernando Rodney give up two hits and a run.

Nationals 4, Marlins 0 (Game One)

Doug Fister, in his final tune-up for a postseason start, allowed just three hits in his second career shutout as the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins in the first game of a doubleheader.

The win secured home advantage throughout the National League playoffs for the Nationals (94-65), the East division champions, who have won nine of their last 11 games.

Fister (16-6), acquired in a trade with the Detroit Tigers in December, won his fourth straight start and has allowed just four earned runs in that time.

Marlins 15, Nationals 7 (Game Two)

Kike Hernandez hit a grand slam, the first of his career, and J.T. Realmuto had three hits and four RBIs as the Marlins pounded out 22 hits to defeat the Nationals and earn a split of the doubleheader.

Pirates 3, Reds 1

Travis Snider drove home the go-ahead run with a two-out double in the eighth and starter Vance Worley allowed one run in six-plus innings, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Vance Worley allowed nine hits but did not walk a batter in 6 1/3 innings.

The Pirates (88-72) trail St Louis by one game in the National League Central.

Cardinals 7, Diamondbacks 6 (10 innings)

St Louis shortstop Jhonny Peralta singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning and the Cardinals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks.

St Louis recovering from blowing a 6-2 lead in the final three innings.

Peralta lined a single to center, his third hit of the game, to score pinch runner Daniel Descalso.

Padres 4, Giants 1

Right-hander Ian Kennedy held playoff-bound San Francisco to one unearned run over seven innings, pitching the San Diego Padres to victory over the Giants.

The loss assured the Giants (86-74) will be on the road for their wild-card playoff game next Wednesday against either Pittsburgh or St Louis.

Dodgers 7, Rockies 4

The Los Angeles Dodgers scored six runs in the sixth inning to set up victory over the Colorado Rockies.

Yankees 3, Red Sox 2

Francisco Cervelli had two hits and drove in a run, former Boston left-hander Chris Capuano was solid into the seventh inning and the New York Yankees opened their final series of shortstop Derek Jeter's career with a win over the Red Sox.

Jeter, playing the 20th season, had the night off after a scintillating home finale at Yankee Stadium on Thursday.

Phillies 5, Braves 4

The Philadelphia Phillies scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and their bullpen secured victory over the Atlanta Braves.



Jonathan Papelbon, coming off a seven-game suspension after directing an inappropriate gesture at Philadelphia fans on Sept. 14, was booed during his trot in from the bullpen, but the jeers turned to cheers when the closer retired the Braves in the ninth to pick up his 39th save.

Astros 3, Mets 1

Houston beat the New York Mets, a win that ensured the Astros (70-90) of 70 wins and means they will avoid finishing in last place for the first time since 2010.

Mets left-hander Jonathon Niese departed in the sixth inning due to an elevated heart rate.

Blue Jays 4, Orioles 2

Dalton Pompey hit two triples and a double and drove in two runs as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Baltimore Orioles.

Toronto right-hander Drew Hutchison (11-13) allowed five hits and two runs and struck out eight in five innings to earn the win.

Indians 1, Rays 0

Corey Kluber pitched eight scoreless inning to get his 18th win, and Jose Ramirez's first inning home run provided the only run of the game as the Cleveland Indians beat the Tampa Bay Rays.

Cubs 6, Brewers 4

Chris Coghlan hit his eighth home run of the season as the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers. (Editing by Andrew Both/John O'Brien)
