04/02/2015 MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Santiago, Ramon
INF Ramon Santiago (fractured left collarbone) was injured making a
diving catch March 14 while playing second base and will be out for
at least 10 weeks. He was playing well enough as a non-roster player
to be a strong candidate for a spot on the Opening Day roster. He
was released so the Blue Jays could avoid paying a $100,000 bonus.
But he could be re-signed.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Viciedo, Dayan
OF Dayan Viciedo was given his release after he was told he would
not open the season with Toronto. He was signed to a minor-league
deal early in spring training after LF Michael Saunders injured his
knee. Saunders is expected to return much sooner than expected and
OF Kevin Pillar has played well, so there was not a spot for
Viciedo, who batted .233/.250/.326 in 15 Grapefruit League games.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Saunders, Michael
LF Michael Saunders will open the season on the disabled list
despite progressing more quickly than expected after undergoing
surgery for a torn left meniscus on Feb. 27. He has been playing in
minor-league games but not running the bases. He could be available
by mid-April. He was injured when he stepped on a sprinkler head
while shagging fly balls on Feb. 25.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Wolf, Randy
LHP Randy Wolf, 38, was signed by the Blue Jays to a minor league
contract as potential depth for the rotation. In his first
Grapefruit League start March 28, he allowed four hits, two walks
and four runs in 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In 2014, he was 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA in six games, including five
starts, with Miami.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Matusz, Brian
LHP Brian Matusz still has an uncertain role in the bullpen. The
former starter struggled for parts of last season and has been
rumored to be a trade chip by the club. Last season, Matusz was 2-3
with a 3.48 ERA. He has pitched well through most of spring training
and has even started a few games as Baltimore was possibly
showcasing him to potential suitors. Matusz has made it clear that
his goal is to get back into a starting rotation, whether it is with
the Orioles or elsewhere.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Bundy, Dylan
RHP Dylan Bundy, 23, could start his highly anticipated career at
the major league level this season. Bundy, who is one of the
franchise's most touted prospects, successfully returned from Tommy
John surgery late last season and did not show any ill effects. He
will start the season in the minors to work on his mechanics and
gain strength, but he will likely be part of the Orioles' bullpen,
or possibly even the rotation, at some point this season. Bundy
already pitched in two games for the Orioles during the 2012 season
and was not overwhelmed by the experience. The next time he arrives
in Baltimore, Bundy is expected to help anchor the pitching staff
for years to come.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles De Aza, Alejandro
OF Alejandro De Aza has the power and speed to find an everyday role
with the Orioles this season. The club acquired him in August for
RHPs Miguel Chalas and Mark Blackmar. De Aza finished with a slash
line of .293/.341/.537, three homers and 10 RBIs in 20 games,
helping Baltimore make a run to the American League Championship
Series. He will likely start in left field and bat leadoff against
right-handed pitchers. De Aza does need to improve defensively, but
he could become the perfect complement to center fielder Adam Jones.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Delabar, Steve
RHP Steve Delabar was surprised and disappointed when he was sent to
Triple-A Buffalo on March 26, but it was an indication of how well
RHP Miguel Castro and RHP Roberto Osuna, both rookies, have pitched.
"I thought I was going to be a big part of this 'pen to start and
it's a big shock to me," Delabar said. "I feel like I'm a
major-league player and I can help a bullpen. I thought I would be
in this bullpen, helping this major-league team." After going to the
2013 All-Star Game, Delabar struggled last season and finished at
Buffalo. Delabar was 3-0 with a 4.91 ERA in 30 games with Toronto in
2014, allowing 19 hits and 19 walks while striking out 21 in 25 2/3
innings. In the Grapefruit League in 2015, he had a 3.86 ERA in
seven games, allowing two home runs. He allowed one walk and struck
out nine but his split-fingered pitch still needed work.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Wilkins, Andy
1B Andy Wilkins was claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox
March 29 and was assigned on option to Triple-A Buffalo. The
26-year-old batted .333 with six RBIs in 14 spring games. The
left-handed hitter batted .293/.338/.558 with 30 homers and 85 RBIs
with Triple-A Charlotte in 2014. "He's had so much success we wanted
to get a look at him," assistant GM Tony LaCava said of the 2010
fifth-round pick. He made his major-league debut in 17 games with
the Chicago White Sox in 2014, hitting .140/.178/186. Wilkins was
designated for assignment after the White Sox claimed RHP Kyle
Drabek from the Blue Jays.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Hutchison, Drew
RHP Drew Hutchison was selected to start on Opening Day at Yankee
Stadium on April 6. RHP R.A. Dickey had started the two previous
Opening Days. The 24-year-old will be the franchise's youngest
Opening Day starter. "It's really exciting. Opening Day is special,"
Hutchison said. "At the end of day, it's a long game. But as we all
know, it's Opening Day. The excitement, the energy -- everything
that goes into it is exciting." Hutchison was 11-13 with a 4.48 ERA
in 32 starts last season after returning from Tommy John surgery. He
was 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in four spring training appearances. "He
answered the big question last year coming off surgery; he can do
this," manager John Gibbons said. "He's bounced back and there's no
looking back, and it's a great honor for him. I think he'll handle
it well."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Lough, David
OF David Lough has some lingering back issues and will start the
season on the disabled list. He struggled for parts of spring
training, going 5-for-27 (.185) before the injury forced him out.
Manager Buck Showalter likes Lough's versatility and defensive
skills, and he still should be an option in the outfield.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Tillman, Chris
RHP Chris Tillman was named the Opening Day starter by Orioles
manager Buck Showalter and he should once again anchor the rotation.
He had a breakout season in 2014, going 13-6 with a 3.34 ERA in a
career-high 34 starts and he has embraced a leadership role with the
club while growing into a No. 1 pitcher.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Gausman, Kevin
RHP Kevin Gausman has pitched well enough this spring to land one of
the five spots in Baltimore's starting rotation. Last season,
Gausman emerged as one of Baltimore's most reliable pitchers, going
7-7 with a 3.57 ERA in 20 starts. However, Orioles manager Buck
Showalter has hinted that Gausman also has the versatility to work
out of the bullpen if needed -- something he did effectively last
year at times.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Wieters, Matt
C Matt Wieters (Tommy John surgery on right elbow) hoped to make it
back for Opening Day, but elbow tendinitis popped up in mid-March
and slowed him. He'll begin the season on the disabled list and
could miss the month of April.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Travis, Devon
2B Devon Travis, who played at Double-A last season, earned the nod
as Opening Day second baseman. INF Maicer Izturis, a front-runner
early in spring training, suffered a groin injury that pushed him to
the disabled list to start the season. INF Ramon Santiago, who was
making a good run at a job, suffered a broken collarbone. The Blue
Jays gave up OF Anthony Gose to obtain Travis from the Detroit
Tigers during the offseason. Travis hit .353/.397/.463 in 21
spring-training games and played better defense than expected.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Ramirez, Erasmo
RHP Erasmo Ramirez, who was acquired from Seattle on Tuesday in a
trade, will begin the season in the rotation, with RHP Alex Cobb,
LHP Drew Smyly and LHP Matt Moore headed to the disabled list. There
is no guarantee for Ramirez's role once the injured starters get
healthy, but president Matt Silverman said he will pitch "meaningful
innings."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Smyly, Drew
LHP Drew Smyly threw live batting practice Wednesday, the first time
he had faced hitters this spring. Smyly has been slowed by shoulder
tendinitis but is progressing so well that the Rays are confident he
will need to miss just one or two starts.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Colome, Alex
RHP Alex Colome will face hitters in a live batting practice session
Friday for the first time since contracting pneumonia. The Rays
figure Colome won't ready to be activated from the disabled list
until late April.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Souza, Steven
RF Steven Souza has just 23 at-bats in the major leagues but already
has a highlight for the ages. His spectacular catch with two outs in
the bottom of the ninth inning preserved a no-hitter for Washington
Nationals RHP Jordan Zimmermann last year on the final day of the
season against the Miami Marlins. The Rays acquired Souza in an
offseason trade and believe the 25-year-old's career is ready to
take off after he hit .350 with 18 home runs and 26 stolen bases in
just 96 games with Triple-A Syracuse last season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Jennings, Desmond
LF Desmond Jennings has never lived up to the hype he generated
while coming up through the Rays' farm system and is being moved to
left field this season so OF Kevin Kiermaier can play center field.
Jennings hit just .244 with a .319 on-base percentage in 123 games
last season, most of them as the leadoff hitter, while adding 10
home runs and 15 stolen bases. Now 28, he is past the point of being
a young player, and it is looking like he will have nothing more
than an ordinary career.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Odorizzi, Jake
RHP Jake Odorizzi had a solid rookie year last season, going 11-13
with a 4.13 ERA in 31 starts. Particularly impressive was Odorizzi's
174 strikeouts in 168 innings, with just 59 walks. He also allowed
156 hits, which were less than one per inning. A split-finger pitch
learned from RHP Alex Cobb during spring training last year gave
Odorizzi something off speed to disrupt the hitters' timing and
became a strikeout pitch as the season went on. There is seemingly
room for improvement, too, as Odorizzi is just 25.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Hardy, J.J.
SS J.J. Hardy (left shoulder strain) starts the season on the
disabled list. The Orioles want to give the shoulder, which he hurt
diving late last week, time to heal. This doesn't seem to be a
long-term situation, and he should return by some point in April.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Refsnyder, Rob
2B Rob Refsnyder remains someone on the rise for the Yankees even
though he will open this season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees knew Refsnyder could hit and he validated that by
batting .333 (13-for-39) in spring training. However, the fielding
is still a work in progress for the converted outfielder. Refsnyder
made six errors in spring training, but INF Brendan Ryan's calf
injury might put him in the mix for opening day. If Refsnyder is not
there for the season opener, he likely won't appear in New York
unless incumbent Stephen Drew falters or gets hurt.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Lindgren, Jacob
LHP Jacob Lindgren was the Yankees' first pick (55th overall) last
season out of Mississippi State and ascended quickly through the
farm system. By the end of last season, Lindgren rose from the
rookie league to Double-A Trenton by striking out 48 hitters in 24
2/3 innings. In eight exhibition appearances, Lindgren had 10
strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings and was among the last cuts in spring
training. While ticketed for the minors, if Lindgren pitches as well
as last season or even better, he could make his major league debut
this season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Vazquez, Christian
C Christian Vazquez will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on
April 2. Vazquez felt discomfort in his right elbow after a March 13
game. He caught in a minor league game March 27 but was instructed
to throw only back to the pitcher. An MRI indicated concern about
the elbow, and Vazquez visited Dr. James Andrews on April 1 for a
second opinion. The recovery time for non-pitchers from elbow
ligament replacement surgery is usually nine months, which would
allow Vazquez to return for the 2016 season. Last season as a
rookie, Vazquez batted .240 with one home run in 55 games for the
Red Sox. Boston placed him on the 60-day disabled list March 30.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Castillo, Rusney
OF Rusney Castillo, who appeared in 10 games for the Red Sox after
signing and playing in the minors last year, was supposed to battle
Mookie Betts for the starting center field job. However, an oblique
injury held Castillo back as Betts flourished. Then Castillo settled
into a battle for right field with Shane Victorino, and if Victorino
was healthy, which he appears to be, there was a real chance
Castillo could start the season in Triple-A.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Warren, Adam
RHP Adam Warren was officially named the Yankees' fifth starter
Wednesday, a week after general manager Brian Cashman said he was
the favorite for the role. Warren is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in five
spring starts and has 11 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Tanaka, Masahiro
RHP Masahiro Tanaka's final start did not go great from a
statistical standpoint as he allowed three runs and seven hits while
throwing 76 pitches Monday. More important than numbers was that
Tanaka's spring training ended with a 3.07 ERA, one walk in 14 2/3
innings without difficulties. "He got through all the hurdles,"
manager Joe Girardi said. "I didn't really ever feel we needed to
give him an extra day or be cautious. He never reported any trouble
with his arm or feeling stiff after more than normal. So I felt that
was all good stuff."
-----------------------------------------------
[to top of second column] |
MLB Note - New York Yankees Ellsbury, Jacoby
CF Jacoby Ellsbury returned to live game action Wednesday and got in
three at-bats after being held out of games for the past two weeks
with a strained right oblique. On Tuesday, Ellsbury had two hits in
five at-bats in a minor league game and in spring training is
batting .200.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Ryan, Brendan
SS Brendan Ryan left Wednesday's game against Tampa Bay with a
strained right calf and seems likely to open the season on the
disabled list. Ryan had a mid-back strain earlier in spring training
and wound up getting 24 at-bats in nine games.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Gregorius, Didi
SS Didi Gregorius could have played Wednesday, but the Yankees
wanted to go through drills as opposed to playing in games.
Gregorius initially injured his wrist Saturday, but the injury was
not serious as he took batting practice, went through fielding
drills Wednesday and will likely play in Thursday's game in
Lakeland, Fla. against the Detroit Tigers.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Eovaldi, Nathan
RHP Nathan Eovaldi, who led the majors in hits allowed last season,
will be the fourth starter. He labored through 89 pitches Sunday but
overall the results have been good as he works to mix in secondary
pitches more often.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Nova, Ivan
RHP Ivan Nova (Tommy John surgery in April 2014) should be able to
return at some point in 2015.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Capuano, Chris
LHP Chris Capuano (right quadriceps strain) left his March 11 start.
He likely will open the season on the disabled list.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Pirela, Jose
INF Jose Pirela (concussion) was hurt when he crashed into the
center field wall on March 22. He was experiencing dizziness and was
seen by a team doctor on March 24. He will swing a bat on April 2
but appears to be a long shot for opening day.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Franklin, Nick
2B Nick Franklin (strained left oblique) will begin the season on
the 15-day disabled list. He is likely out through the end of April.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Cobb, Alex
RHP Alex Cobb (right forearm tendinitis) will begin the season on
the 15-day disabled list. He is expected to miss just one or two
starts.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Colome, Alex
RHP Alex Colome (pneumonia) will begin the season on the 15-day
disabled list. He is expected to be activated in mid-April.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Moore, Matt
LHP Matt Moore (Tommy John surgery in April 2014) will begin the
season on the 60-day disabled list. He is tentatively set to return
in June.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Smyly, Drew
LHP Drew Smyly (left shoulder tendinitis) will begin the season on
the 15-day disabled list. He is expected to miss just one or two
starts.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays McGee, Jake
LHP Jake McGee (arthroscopic left elbow surgery in December 2014)
will begin the season on the 15-day disabled. He could be activated
by early May.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Pompey, Dalton
CF Dalton Pompey leads an array of Toronto rookies. After a rapid
rise through the system last year, the 22-year-old showed enough in
a September trial to earn a shot at the regular center fielder's job
this season, replacing CF Colby Rasmus, who signed with the Houston
Astros. Pompey is a superb defensive player who also has a solid
approach at the plate. He was batting .333/.390/.519 after 19
Grapefruit League games. Last season, he batted .317/.392/.469 at
Class A Dunedin, Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo. That
earned him a September trial at Toronto, where he hit .231/.302/.436
in 17 games.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Castro, Miguel
RHP Miguel Castro burst into prominence with a sensational spring
training. The 20-year-old's fastball was timed at 100 mph. With a
plus changeup at 83 mph and a decent slider, Castro was baffling
hitters. The native of the Dominican Republic, who is 6-foot-5 and
190 pounds, figures to be a reliever this season, but he has been a
starter and that could be his future. He was 8-3 with a 2.68 ERA in
16 games (15 starts) last season at short-season Class A Vancouver,
Class A Lansing and Class A Dunedin.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Reyes, Jose
SS Jose Reyes played poor defense last season. It was an issue that
often was overlooked during the offseason because the Blue Jays had
so many other holes to fill. Shoulder and hamstring problems might
have contributed to Reyes' defensive woes, but he has been a
below-average fielder since 2009 with diminishing range,
particularly to his left. He showed some occasional improvement
during spring training. Reyes has made his name on offense, and he
is still one of the better leadoff hitters. He batted .287/.328/.398
in 143 games in 2014, with 30 stolen bases in 32 attempts, a slight
decline from 2012 when he batted .291/.341/.435 and had 40 steals in
51 attempts with Miami. He cannot afford to decline much more.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Stroman, Marcus
RHP Marcus Stroman (left knee surgery in March 2015) had a torn
anterior cruciate ligament repaired March 19. He is out for the
season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Cecil, Brett
LHP Brett Cecil (left shoulder inflammation) didn't make his first
Grapefruit League appearance until March 26, but he threw one
scoreless inning that day and again March 29 and March 31. He is
expected to be ready for Opening Day as the closer.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Barnes, Matt
RHP Matt Barnes came to camp as a starter and appeared ready to
leave Florida as a member of the Boston bullpen. Barnes, 24, is one
of the club's top prospects. Slowed by a bout with food poisoning
late in camp, Barnes had a 5.25 ERA in seven Grapefruit League games
through April 1. He appeared in five games in relief for Boston last
year, recording a 4.00 ERA. In 23 games (22 starts) for Triple-A
Pawtucket in 2014, Barnes went 8-9 with 3.95 ERA.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Sandoval, Pablo
3B Pablo Sandoval's numbers have been going down in recent years --
terrific World Series stats aside. While people blame conditioning
every time the bulky veteran doesn't get a hit, Sandoval has seen
his on-base-plus-slugging percentage go from .909 in 2011 to .789,
.758 and .739 the last three years. His slugging percentage, .552 in
2011, dropped to .447, .417 and .415.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Ortiz, David
DH David Ortiz took to Derek Jeter's new athlete's website, The
Players' Tribune, to defend himself against those who think he has
been a steroid user. "In some people's minds, I will always be
considered a cheater," he wrote, "and that's bull----. Mark my
words: Nobody in MLB history has been tested for PEDs more than me.
You know how many times I've been tested since 2004? More than 80.
They say these tests are random. If it's really random, I should
start playing the damn lottery. Some people still think the testing
is a joke. It's no joke. Ten times a season these guys come into the
clubhouse or my home with their briefcases. I have never failed a
single one of those tests and I never will."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Napoli, Mike
1B Mike Napoli, whose 2014 season ended early because of hand
surgery and whose winter was spent having and recovering from
painful facial surgery aimed at helping him sleep, battled some
minor things in camp. However, he also hit a broken-bat home run. "I
watched the video on it," Napoli said. "It looked like I got the
barrel to it. My at-bat before, when I shot the ball to right field,
he kind of got in a little bit on me. That's probably where it broke
there."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Leon, Sandy
C Sandy Leon was acquired by the Red Sox from the Nationals after
starting C Christian Vazquez was lost to an elbow injury. Leon's
arrival gave the Red Sox two veteran catchers (Leon and Ryan
Hanigan), allowing the club to continue the growth of prized
prospect Blake Swihart in the minor leagues. Humberto Quintero was
in camp for late competition.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Magee, Brandon
OF Brandon Magee, an NFL linebacker, arrived in the Red Sox's camp
after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "As of the now, I
don't even know exactly what I'm going to do next week," said Magee,
a Sox pick in the 2012 draft. "I'm just taking it day by day to see
where it goes." Magee was confident in his baseball ability, saying,
"If I can focus on this, I can make it. That's not even a concern."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Kelly, Joe
RHP Joe Kelly (right biceps tightness) left his March 16 start, and
he didn't pitch in a Grapefruit League game March 17-April 1. He
didn't believe the ailment was serious, but he is likely to start to
the season on the disabled list.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Uehara, Koji
RHP Koji Uehara was down with a hamstring problem that didn't seem
to be getting better, making it likely he will be on the disabled
list at the start of the season. "I don't know when I'll be back,"
said Uehara, who hadn't appeared in a game since March 14 and felt
the problem during a 30-pitch bullpen session March 30. "It's a
day-to-day process. I have to do what I have to do to get ready. If
that is the case, if I start on the DL, it will certainly be a
disappointment."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Mets Gee, Dillon
RHP Dillon Gee edged RHP Rafael Montero for the fifth spot in the
Mets' rotation. Gee, 28, was the Mets' Opening Day starter in 2014.
He was headed for a bullpen role before RHP Zack Wheeler hurt his
elbow in spring training. Gee likely will make his first start of
the season on the road against the Braves on April 10 or 11. He had
a 2.49 ERA in 21 2/3 innings this spring through April 1. He is
40-34 with a 3.91 ERA in 106 career appearances (103 starts) for the
Mets.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Mets Montero, Rafael
RHP Rafael Montero is expected to open the season in the bullpen. He
pitched six scoreless innings against the Marlins on March 30, and
he had a 2.40 ERA this spring through April 1.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Washington Nationals Rendon, Anthony
3B Anthony Rendon (sprained left medial collateral ligament) was
injured when he dived for a ball in a March 9 spring training game,
and he will open the season on the disabled list. Rendon received
second and third opinions that confirmed the MCL injury. The
timetable for his return is uncertain.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Houston Astros Petit, Gregorio
INF Gregorio Petit was acquired from the Astros April 1 for cash as
insurance for injured shortstops Brendan Ryan and Didi Gregorius.
Petit hit .278 with two homers and nine RBIs in 37 games last
season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Houston Astros Smith, Kyle
RHP Kyle Smith underwent Tommy John surgery in late March, the
Houston Chronicle reported. Smith was a Texas League All-Star in
2014, posting a 9-5 record with a 3.95 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 21
games (13 starts). Smith, 22, will miss the entire season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Detroit Tigers Verlander, Justin
RHP Justin Verlander, trying to recover from a cramp in his right
triceps muscle, resumed throwing Wednesday, but his scheduled
regular-season debut in one week is now in question. "It's a little
bit of a stretch right now," manager Brad Ausmus said of Verlander's
chances to pitch April 8 in Detroit, "but I wouldn't wave it off."
