04/06/2015 MLB Note - Cleveland Indians Carrasco, Carlos

RHP Carlos Carrasco, whose career seemed dead in the water early in the 2014 season, rallied late in the season for such a strong and impressive finish that he will start the 2015 season as the No. 2 starter in the rotation. In Carrasco's last 10 starts last year he had a 1.30 ERA and opposing teams hit .179 against him. In 40 appearances overall, 14 starts, he had a 2.55 ERA. He could be poised for a breakout season in 2015. Carrasco reportedly signed a three-year extension with the Indians on Saturday. Carrasco's extension is worth about $22 million in guaranteed money, according to FOX Sports. It also includes two club options in 2019 and 2020. Carrasco, 28, was due to make $2.34 million this season, which is his first year of arbitration eligibility. This extension buys out his remaining two arbitration years and one year of free agency.Carrasco was 8-7 with a 2.55 ERA last season. He is scheduled to start Cleveland's second regular-season game.

Offensively, Chisenhall hit just .227 with a .299 on base percentage from June 10 through the end of the 2014 season.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - St. Louis Cardinals Heyward, Jason

RF Jason Heyward was 3-for-5 and recorded doubles in his first two at-bats as a Cardinal. He's the first player with three or more hits in his St. Louis debut since Aaron Miles on April 3, 2006. -----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Cleveland Indians Murphy, David

OF David Murphy, who got most of the playing time in right field last year, will be more of a fourth outfielder following the acquisition of OF Brandon Moss in an offseason trade with the A's. -----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Sweeney, Ryan

OF Ryan Sweeney, the last player cut on Sunday, was a tough call. "I thought Ryan had a great spring training," manager Joe Maddon said. "I've seen him from the other side and I didn't realize how good an at-bat he works. I can see him being a very desirable National League player coming off the bench."

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - San Diego Padres Kimbrel, Craig

RHP Craig Kimbrel and OF Melvin Upton Jr. were acquired by the Padres from the Braves on Sunday in exchange for OFs Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin and two minor-leaguers, RHP Matt Wisler and OF Jordan Paroubeck.

Kimbrel, 26, was the 2011 NL Rookie of the Year, and he was an All-Star in each of his full major league seasons. Last year, he went 47-for-51 on save chances and posted a 1.61 ERA. He finished in the top 10 in NL Cy Young Award voting for the fourth year running.

Kimbrel is entering the second year of a four-year, $42 million deal that will pay him $9 million this year, $11 million next year and $13 in 2017. The club holds a $13 million option for 2018 with a $1 million buyout.

In two seasons with the Braves, he batted a combined .198 with a .279 on-base percentage, a .314 slugging percentage, 21 homers and 61 RBIs. He still has three years and $46.35 million left on his contract, huge money for a player who figures to ride the bench in San Diego.

Upton (sesamoiditis in left foot) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He might be able to join the Padres in May.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Atlanta Braves Quentin, Carlos

OFs Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin and two minor-leaguers, RHP Matt Wisler and OF Jordan Paroubeck, were acquired by the Braves from the Padres on Sunday in exchange for RHP Craig Kimbrel and OF Melvin Upton Jr.

Quentin, 32, has played no more than 86 games in each of the past three years due to a variety of injuries. Last year, he batted .177/.284.315 with four homers and 18 RBIs in 50 games. He was not going to be an everyday player in the revamed San Diego outfield.

Quentin is owed $8 million in 2015, the last year of a three-year, $27 million contract that includes a $10 mutual option for 2016.

"He had a good camp and he's very versatile and can play the infield, which we thought we needed that extra infielder right now," manager Joe Maddon said. Herrera batted .300 in 22 games, including 12 hits while walking three times and striking out five times.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Lester, Jon

LHP Jon Lester (0-1) worked 4 1/3 innings in his Cubs debut and allowed eight hits and three earned runs while walking two and striking out six. "Not much working, little bit of a grind from the get-go," said Lester (0-1). "A lot of balls up in the zone, I wasn't real sharp. The ball was flat." Lester also batted eighth in the Opening Night lineup, only the second time the Chicago pitcher batted in a spot other than No. 9 since 1914. RHP Jeff Samardzija batted eighth for the Cubs on Sept. 8, 2012 at Pittsburgh.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Atlanta Braves Terdoslavich, Joey

He was not going to be an everyday player in the revamed San Diego outfield.

SS Francisco Lindor, 21, won't start the season on the Indians' big league roster, but he is expected to recalled sometime before the All-Star break, completing his meteoric rise through the system after the Indians selected him with the eighth overall pick in the 2011 draft. Lindor, considered one of the top prospects in all of the minor leagues, will start the year at Triple-A Columbus, where he had only 165 at bats last year. By letting Lindor start the season at Columbus the Indians will also delay the start of his major league service time, thereby getting an extra year of control before he could become a free agent.

-----------------------------------------------

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Zito, Barry

LHP Barry Zito threw one scoreless inning April 4 against the San Francisco Giants in an exhibition game and afterward was told he would be assigned to the Oakland Athletics' Triple-A team in Nashville. Zito compiled a 4.79 ERA with a 14/5 K/BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings this spring. He had been hoping to win a spot in the Athletics' starting rotation, but when that wasn't a possibility, he vied for a bullpen spot. MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Hamilton, Josh

OF Josh Hamilton will not be disciplined or suspended after an arbitrator ruled April 3 he did not violate his drug treatment program. Major League Baseball announced the decision regarding Hamilton's latest problems involving alcohol and a drug of abuse. MLB said it disagreed with the arbitrator's decision. A four-person treatment board created by baseball's joint drug program, which includes one lawyer and one medical representative each appointed by management and the players' association, deadlocked 2-2 on whether Hamilton should be disciplined. An arbitrator was then brought in to break the tie. According to reports last month, Hamilton, 33, self-reported a relapse of cocaine and alcohol use during the offseason and went to New York in February for a meeting with MLB officials.
