Freshman Jeffrey Barton earned his first collegiate win with five
shutout innings of work, while leadoff hitter Daniel Dwyer paced the
Redbirds’ offensive attack with three hits.

Illinois State (14-15) scored five runs in the bottom of the third
inning. The rally started with an RBI single from Dwyer and
continued with an RBI double from Ryan Koziol. Jared Hendren singled
to score Koziol moments later, before Sean Beesley capped the
scoring in the inning with a two-run single.

The Redbirds tacked on three more in the fifth. The inning started
with an RBI double from Paul DeJong. Run-scoring groundouts from
Hendren and Beesley extended the Illinois State lead to 8-0.

Northern Illinois (13-18) cut that lead in half, however, with a
four-run sixth inning. All four runs were scored against ISU
reliever Will Headean. Those were the final runs scored by the
visitors, though, as ISU relievers Jake Sale, Jack Czeszewski and
Ryan Koziol finished out the game, each pitching a 1-2-3 frame.

Barton went five innings in his second collegiate start, allowing
just three hits and one walk, while striking out four.
