[April 08, 2015]  April 7 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's National Hockey League games.

Senators 4, Penguins 3 (overtime)

The Ottawa Senators rallied from three goals down in the first period to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in overtime.

Mark Stone's second of the night with 2:17 left in the extra session gave the Senators playoff hopes a boost and prevented the Penguins from sewing up a berth.

Ottawa (41-26-13) are now tied with the Boston Bruins for the final wild card spot, but the Bruins have a game in hand and win the tie-breaker between the two teams.

Sidney Crosby opened the scoring for the Penguins (42-26-12) with his 28th goal of the season.

Rangers 4, Devils 2

The New York Rangers clinched the President's Trophy for winning the most points in the regular season and locked up home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs by defeating the New Jersey Devils 4-2.

New York (52-21-7) also tied the franchise record for regular-season wins set in 1993-94, when the organisation won their fourth Stanley Cup.

The Rangers, who have 111 points, got first-period goals from Kevin Hayes and Ryan McDonagh and third-period goals from James Sheppard and Carl Hagelin, the latter into an empty net.

The Devils (32-35-13) will miss the playoffs for the third straight season.

Wild 2, Blackhawks 1

The Minnesota Wild clinched their third consecutive playoff berth with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Mikael Granlund and Jason Zucker scored and goaltender Devan Dubnyk stopped 32 of 33 shots for the Wild (45-27-8).

Bryan Bickell scored the Blackhawks' lone goal as Chicago (48-26-6) dropped their second consecutive game on home ice.

Jets 1, Blues 0

Ondrej Pavelec recorded his second shutout in as many nights as Winnipeg scored a 1-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues, giving the Jets two key points in the battle for a playoff spot.

Pavelec made 30 saves against the Blues for his fourth shutout of the season and the win moved Winnipeg into a tie with the Minnesota Wild for the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference with 96 points.

Red Wings 3, Hurricanes 2

Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk each had a goal and an assist as the Detroit Red Wings rallied to beat Carolina 3-2 and moved closer to clinching their 24th straight playoff berth.

The Red Wings, who saw Gustav Nyquist also score and goaltender Jimmy Howard make 30 saves, could have clinched a post-season berth with an Ottawa loss but the Senators defeated Pittsburgh to prolong the wait.

Chris Terry had a goal and an assist and Nathan Gerbe scored for Carolina.

Avalanche 3, Predators 2

Jarome Iginla and Ryan O'Reilly scored nine seconds apart, Joey Hishon got his first NHL goal and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Nashville Predators 3-2.

Ryan Ellis and Calle Jarnkrok had goals and goalie Pekka Rinne had 20 saves for the Predators (47-23-10), who lost their fourth straight and missed the chance to move ahead of St. Louis in the battle for the Central Division title.

Nashville trail the Blues by a point but hold the tiebreaker.

Flames 3, Coyotes 2

Sean Monahan ripped home his 31st goal of the season to break a third-period deadlock and give the Calgary Flames a 3-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes.

The teams traded goals twice before Monahan made a nifty move to shake a defender and fire a top-corner blast past Mike Smith to put the Flames ahead at 9:26 of the third period.

The win keeps the Flames (44-29-7) ahead of the Los Angeles Kings in the Pacific Division playoff race and means Calgary can clinch their first playoff berth since 2009 with a regulation victory over Los Angeles on Thursday.

Flyers 5, Islanders 4

Brayden Schenn scored a stunning goal with two seconds left in regulation to lift Philadelphia to a 5-4 win over the New York Islanders.

The Islanders (46-28-6) trailed 4-1 but capped a furious third-period rally 18 seconds before the go-ahead score when Anders Lee notched his second goal of the night on a pass from John Tavares.

Flyers center Claude Giroux scored his 24th and 25th goals of the season, and Philadelphia (33-29-18) netminder Steve Mason made 36 saves.
