[April 09, 2015]  April 8 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Wednesday's National Hockey League games:

Capitals 3, Bruins 0

The Washington Capitals delivered a damaging blow to the Boston Bruins' hopes of an eighth successive post-season appearance with a convincing win.

Defensemen John Carlson and Matt Niskanen and Marcus Johansson each scored goals while Braden Holtby made 27 saves as the Capitals (45-25-11) moved to 101 points, three ahead of the third-place New York Islanders in the Metropolitan Division.

The Caps can clinch home ice advantage in the playoffs with any combination of a point gained against the New York Rangers in their final game on Saturday or a point lost by the Islanders in their final two games.
 


Boston (41-26-13) are tied with the Ottawa Senators for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Both teams have 95 points with two games to play.

Blue Jackets 5, Maple Leafs 0

Columbus scored three times in the first period, with five different players scoring altogether in their rout of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky finished with 35 saves for his second shutout of the season and 11th of his career.

Stars 4, Ducks 0

The Dallas Stars cruised to a 4-0 victory over Anaheim (50-24-7), who would have clinched top spot with a victory in regulation but now leave the door open for the St. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators.

The Stars (40-31-10) have already been eliminated from playoff contention.

Patrick Eaves netted two goals and Jamie Benn notched three assists for the Stars. Center Vernon Fiddler, defenseman Jordie Benn also scored goals for Dallas.

No. 2 goaltender Jhonas Enroth earned the shutout with 19 saves, the fifth of his career, second of the season and his first with the Stars.

Ducks keeper Frederik Andersen stopped 28 of 32 shots.
