[April 09, 2015]  April 8 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Wednesday's Major League Baseball games:

Giants 5, Diamondbacks 2

San Francisco third baseman Casey McGehee hit a two-run home run and rookie right-hander Chris Heston picked up his first Major League victory when the Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Heston, recalled Tuesday to take injured Matt Cain's spot in the rotation, gave up three hits and two unearned runs in six innings as the Giants improved to 2-1.

Angels 5, Mariners 3

The Los Angeles Angels jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on to beat the Seattle Mariners to take the opening series between the two teams expected to battle for the American League West crown.

Albert Pujols hit a two-run home run for Los Angeles (2-1) who got six solid innings from pitcher Matt Shoemaker before the bullpen held off Seattle (1-2).

A's 10, Rangers 0

Scott Kazmir pitched seven shutout innings, and rookie first baseman Mark Canha went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs in his Major League debut, leading the Oakland A's to a rout of the Texas Rangers.

Kazmir allowed just one hit and struck out 10 in his first start of the season, notching double-digit strikeouts for the 23rd time in his career.

Dodgers 7, Padres 4

Adrian Gonzalez hit three solo home runs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres.

Gonzalez finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored to give the Dodgers (2-1) the series victory against the Padres (1-2). Gonzalez already has five home runs on the season.

Reds 5, Pirates 4 (11 innings)

Joey Votto's single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning drove home shortstop Zack Cozart, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on a stormy evening.

The game was delayed 2 hours, 34 minutes by rain. Votto tied the game 4-4 with an RBI single in the seventh before ending it in the 11th to take Cincinnati to 2-0.

Rockies 5, Brewers 4 (10 innings)

The Colorado Rockies overcame a late rally by the Milwaukee Brewers for a win 10 innings, securing a series sweep and a 3-0 start to the season.

Pinch-hitter Wilin Rosario was the hero for the Rockies in the top of the 10th, taking a 3-2 fastball from Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez over the wall in right field for a solo shot that gave the Rockies the lead for good.

Nationals 2, Mets 1

Washington Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann allowed one run in six innings, and first baseman Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer in the first as the Nationals beat the New York Mets.

Zimmermann gave up five hits and no walks with four strikeouts before reliever Craig Stammen took over in the seventh. Closer Drew Storen got his first save of the season as he pitched a perfect ninth for the Nationals (1-1).

Cubs 2, Cardinals 0

Starlin Castro's seventh-inning RBI single to left-center field delivered a go-ahead run as the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals.

Jake Arrieta tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out seven to give the Cubs (1-1) their first win of the season.

Rays 2, Orioles 0

Tampa Bay starter Jake Odorizzi and three relievers combined for a three-hit shutout, giving rookie manager Kevin Cash his first career win as the Rays edged the Baltimore Orioles.

Desmonod Jennings had an RBI single for the Rays (1-2) who got their first lead of 2015 -- in their 24th inning of the season.

The Orioles fell to 2-1.

Indians 2, Astros 0

Carlos Carrasco took a shutout into the seventh inning, his final of the game as Cleveland defeated the Houston Astros.

Carlos Santana and Mike Aviles hit solo home runs to lead the Indians (1-1) to victory.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 3

Third baseman Chase Headley singled with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning and the New York Yankees rallied for a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Yankees (1-1) scored three times in the inning to earn their first victory of the season.

Tigers 11, Twins 0

Ian Kinsler drove in four runs, Jose Iglesias chipped in four hits and Anibal Sanchez pitched 6 2/3 innings of three-hit shutout ball to lead Detroit to a victory over Minnesota, the Tigers' second straight shutout win over the Twins.



Two-time MVP Miguel Cabrera also had two hits and two RBIs as Detroit (2-0) dropped the Twins to 0-2.

Cubs 2, Cardinals 0

Starlin Castro's seventh-inning RBI single to left-center field delivered a go-ahead run as the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals.

Castro drove in first baseman Anthony Rizzo with none out and later scored from third on catcher Miguel Montero's sacrifice fly to right as the Cubs evened their record at 1-1.

Phillies 4, Red Sox 2

Jeff Francoeur's three-run homer in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Boston Red Sox.

The Phillies (1-1) failed to score in the first 14 innings of the season after they were shut out by the Red Sox on Monday in the season opener but Francoeur changed that with one swing.

Royals 7, White Sox 5

Lorenzo Cain, who reached base four times, hit a two-run homer in the eighth as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-5 Wednesday night.

Cain hit the first pitch from Zack Putnam out to deep left with Alcides Escobar aboard. Cain and Escobar went a combined 6-for-9 with three runs and two RBIs as the Royals improved to 2-0. (Editing by Jahmal Corner/Sudipto Ganguly)
