[April 30, 2015]  April 29 (The Sports Xchange) - Major League Baseball ruled there was no tampering when manager Joe Maddon left the Tampa Bay Rays and signed with the Chicago Cubs.

Maddon had one year remaining on his contract when he left Tampa Bay in late October, taking advantage of an opt-out clause in his contract after Rays executive Andrew Friedman left to become vice president of baseball operations with the Dodgers.

A few days later, Maddon agreed to a five-year, $25 million deal with the Cubs.

The Rays suspected there had been prior contact and asked MLB to investigate potential tampering.

The New York Yankees placed right-hander Masahiro Tanaka on the 15-day disabled list with right wrist tendinitis and a right forearm strain.

The team recalled infielder Gregorio Petit from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before their game Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Tanaka was slated to start Wednesday on five days' rest but alerted the Yankees to the problem Tuesday and went for an MRI exam.

The Cincinnati Reds placed left-hander Manny Parra on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained neck.

The team also moved right-hander Homer Bailey, who is out with a sprained elbow, to the 60-day DL.

Parra was 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in seven games. His move to the DL opened a spot for Michael Lorenzen, who was called up from Triple-A Louisville to make his debut against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.

The Boston Red Sox made four player moves, designating right-hander Anthony Varvaro for assignment, sending outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. to Triple-A Pawtucket and recalling pitchers Tommy Layne and Dalier Hinojosa.

Varvaro had given up four runs on eight hits over his last 3 1/3 innings. Bradley lasted just one day in his most recent call-up. He hit just .198 last season.

Layne, a left-hander, appeared in four games for Boston earlier this season, allowing three runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings. Hinojosa, a 29-year-old right-hander, is 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA in four games with Pawtucket this season.
