The Pirates loaded the bases with none out against Jim Johnson as
Jung Ho Kang walked, Francisco Cervelli singled and Sean Rodriguez
had a bunt single. JP. Howell relieved and manager Don Mattingly
moved an outfield into the infield, but Alvarez singled for the
winning hit.
The Pirates won for the 13th time in their last 16 home games and
improved to 37-18 at PNC Park this season.
Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw had his streak of 37 consecutive
scoreless innings end when Gregory Polanco hit his first pitch of
the game for a home run. Kershaw gave up four runs and nine hits in
six innings.
Twins 10, Indians 9
CLEVELAND -- Torii Hunter's home run in the top of the ninth inning
lifted Minnesota over Cleveland.
With the score tied 9-9, Hunter belted the first pitch to him by
Bryan Shaw over the right field wall for his 18th home run of the
season. Hunter fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle with a
single, double, home run and three RBI in five at-bats.
After blowing an early 6-0 lead, the Twins fell behind 9-7. They
scored a run in the fifth to make it 9-8, then tied it with a run in
the sixth.
Blue Jays 2, Yankees 1 (10 innings)
NEW YORK -- Jose Bautista hit a tiebreaking home run with one out in
the top of the 10th inning and Toronto extended its winning streak
to six games.
Bautista gave Toronto its ninth win in 10 games and helped the Blue
Jays moved to within 3 1/2 games of New York when he drove a 2-2
fastball from Branden Pinder into the left-field seats. It was
Bautista's 25th homer and fourth in his last 11 games and it came
after Toronto left the bases loaded in the seventh and the potential
go-ahead run on third in the ninth.
R.A Dickey gave up a second-inning solo homer to Mark Teixeira.
Nathan Eovaldi allowed a first-inning homer to Josh Donaldson.
Mets 4, Rays 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Wilmer Flores hit an RBI single in the top
of the ninth inning to rally New York past Tampa Bay.
Brad Boxberger fell to 4-8 after his third blown save of the year.
Lucas Duda reached on an error in the ninth and advanced to second
on a wild pitch with no outs. After Boxberger retired Juan Uribe on
a pop fly, Michael Conforto doubled to drive in Duda and tie the
score. Flores singled with runners on first and third, sending
Conforto across the plate for the go-ahead run.
Tyler Clippard had given up a solo home run to Evan Longoria that
put the Rays in front 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth.
Rockies 5, Nationals 4
WASHINGTON -- Carlos Gonzalez blasted a two-out grand slam -- his
19th homer since June 1 -- in the top of the eighth inning off Drew
Storen as Colorado came back to beat Washington.
Gonzalez slammed his 23rd homer of the year into the Washington
bullpen in right after Storen gave up a walk and two singles to load
the bases. The winning pitcher was Scott Oberg, who pitched a
scoreless seventh.
Colorado won for just the fourth time in 11 games and the Nationals
lost for the sixth time in eight games.
Royals 3, White Sox 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Lorenzo Cain doubled, tripled, drove in a run
and scored a run as Kansas City beat Chicago.
Cain doubled home Ben Zobrist, who began the inning with a single,
with the first run in the two-run sixth. It was Zobrist's first game
at Kauffman Stadium as a member of the Royals after being acquired
last week in a trade with Oakland. Cain scored on Eric Hosmer's
single
Greg Holland gave up a homer to Adam LaRoche in the ninth but
claimed his 24th save.
Cubs 7, Giants 3
CHICAGO -- Jon Lester allowed two runs and six hits in a strong
seven-inning outing and Chicago batters backed him with 12 hits
against San Francisco.
The win was the eighth in nine games for the Cubs and second
straight in the showdown series between National League wild-card
contenders. Chicago is now a season-high 12 games above .500.
Lester struck out three and walked two in his second straight win
and third since July 19. Hector Rondon worked 1 2/3 scoreless
innings for his 18th save. Dexter Fowler went 3-for-5 with a double
and a homer.
Red Sox 7, Tigers 2
DETROIT -- David Ortiz hit a two-run homer and Hanley Ramirez and
Xander Bogaerts each smacked a two-run double to lead Boston over
Detroit.
There was a dustup in the Detroit dugout after the top of the sixth
inning when Jose Iglesias shoved James McCann in the chest after the
rookie catcher seemed to point out to the middle of the infield and
said something to the shortstop. Iglesias was quickly restrained by
teammates.
The Tigers scored their runs in the fourth when J.D. Martinez hit
his 30th homer of the year.
Braves 6, Marlins 3
ATLANTA -- Nick Markakis drove home two runs with a bases-loaded
single in the seventh inning to highlight a four-run rally and lift
Atlanta over Miami.
The Braves were beneficiaries that inning of two calls that were
overturned by video replay and led to two runs.
It was the fifth straight loss for the Marlins, who have dropped
nine of 11 games to the Braves.

Cardinals 6, Brewers 0
MILWAUKEE -- Backed by a six-run fifth inning, Lance Lynn pitched
six scoreless innings to lead St. Louis over Milwaukee.
Lynn allowed six hits and walked four but repeatedly worked out of
trouble to collect his ninth win. It was St. Louis' 12th shutout of
the season.
Brandon Moss led off with a St. Louis sixth with a double and came
around to score when Stephen Piscotty doubled. Matt Carpenter made
it 2-0 with the third double of the inning. Jason Heyward hit a
two-out RBI single to center and Randal Grichuk belted a three-run
homer.
Diamondbacks 2, Reds 0
PHOENIX -- Arizona catcher Welington Castillo homered and
right-hander Chase Anderson pitched seven scoreless innings in his
return from the disabled list in the Diamondbacks' victory.
Castillo's bases-empty, seventh-inning home run, which gave Arizona
a 2-0 lead, was his seventh homer in his last 11 games. Castillo has
12 homers since joining the Diamondbacks in a trade with Seattle on
June 3, and his 14 homers are a career high.
Anderson (5-4) gave up four hits and retired the last eight batters
he faced in his first start since July 18, when he was placed on the
disabled list with right triceps inflammation. He struck out seven
and walked two.
Athletics 3, Astros 1
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Right-hander Sonny Gray pitched his fifth career
complete game, outdueling lefty Dallas Keuchel in a battle of
American League Cy Young Award contenders and leading the A's to
victory.
Gray (12-4) allowed just one run on five hits. He struck out five
and walked none, winning for the fifth time in his past six
decisions. Gray lowered his ERA to 2.06.
Keuchel (13-6) allowed three runs and 10 hits over 7 2/3 innings,
striking out three and walking two.
A's third baseman Danny Valencia went 2-for-3 with a solo home run
leading off the third inning. It was his eighth blast of the season
and first since being claimed off waivers by the A's from Toronto on
Monday.
Mariners 4, Rangers 3
SEATTLE -- The Mariners hit three homers off new Texas starter Cole
Hamels on the way to ending the Rangers' five-game winning streak.
Left fielder Mark Trumbo, right fielder Nelson Cruz and second
baseman Robinson Cano all hit solo homers, with Cruz and Cano going
back-to-back in the sixth, as Seattle (51-59) won for the fourth
time in five games.
Hamels (0-1) fell to 0-3 with a 7.31 ERA in three starts against AL
teams. He allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings, with
Seattle's first run coming on a Hamels balk in the third inning.
Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma (3-2) threw a career-high 118
pitches over seven innings, allowing six hits and three walks.
Angels 8, Orioles 4
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Catcher Chris Iannetta and pinch-hitter C.J. Cron
drove in two runs apiece to help Los Angeles win for the third time
in four games and move within 1 1/2 games of the first-place Houston
Astros in the American League West.
Cron hit the Angels' first pinch-hit home run of the season. Center
fielder Mike Trout added his 33rd homer and finished with two hits.
Third baseman Manny Machado had three of the Orioles' 12 hits.
Second baseman Jonathan Schoop and catcher Matt Wieters hit home
runs.
Phillies 4, Padres 3 (12 innings)
SAN DIEGO -- Philadelphia slugged four solo home runs, with catcher
Cameron Rupp's game-winner coming off of reliever Kevin Quackenbush
in the 12th inning.
Philadelphia erased a 3-0 deficit, getting home runs from right
fielder Domonic Brown, first baseman Ryan Howard and left fielder
Cody Asche.
The Phillies snapped a two-game skid in winning for a major-league
best 14th time in 19 games since the All-Star break.
