[August 15, 2015]  Aug 14 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Major League Baseball games on Friday:

Cubs 6, White Sox 5

Chris Coghlan hit two home runs, including the first of back-to-back homers in the fifth inning, to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 6-5 win against the crosstown rival White Sox.

The Cubs (66-48) won for the eighth succesive time and 14th in their last 15 games.

Coghlan led the charge by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 3

Pinch-hitter Carlos Beltran hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning as the New York Yankees held on to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays.

The homer against right-handed reliever Aaron Sanchez (6-5) capped a four-run eighth for the Yankees, who ended the Blue Jays' 11-game winning streak.

New York (63-51) regained a half-game lead over second-place Toronto (64-53) in the American League East.

Cardinals 3, Marlins 1

Jaime Garcia piloted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins.

Garcia (5-4) scattered six hits and allowed an unearned run, walking one and striking out six.

Pirates 3, Mets 2 (10 innings)

Right fielder Gregory Polanco's 10th inning RBI single snapped a tie as the Pittsburgh Pirates went on to beat the New York Mets.

Indians 6, Twins 1

Cleveland Indians right-hander Corey Kluber allowed one hit and two runners to reach in a dominant complete-game performance, leading the Indians to a 6-1 win over Minnesota.

Brewers 3, Phillies 1

Wily Peralta held the Philadelphia Phillies scoreless over seven innings as the Milwaukee Brewers built an early lead and hung on for a 3-1 victory.

Braves 3, Diamondbacks 2

Right-hander Julio Teheran allowed only one run over six innings in the Atlanta Braves' 3-2 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Teheran (8-6) gave up three hits, two walks and struck out seven.

Red Sox 15, Mariners 1

Hours after learning manager John Farrell was about to begin a battle against lymphoma, the Boston Red Sox pummeled the Seattle Mariners 15-1.

Rookie first baseman Travis Shaw hit two homers and drove in three runs, rookie right fielder Rusney Castillo homered and second baseman Brock Holt and third baseman Pablo Sandoval both drove in three runs to highlight a 21-hit attack.

Rangers 5, Rays 3

Texas Rangers left fielder Josh Hamilton had a home run and drove in two runs, including the go-ahead run in the Rangers' two-run eighth inning, to help the Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 victory on Friday.

Shortstop Elvis Andrus also had a run-scoring single in the inning for Texas, which snapped the Rays' four-game win streak.

Right-handed reliever Sam Dyson (4-4) earned the victory with an inning of work in the eighth. Right-hander Shawn Tolleson picked up his 22nd save with a scoreless ninth for the Rangers (57-57).

Royals 4, Angels 1

Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer and Danny Duffy pitched six solid innings as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 on Friday.

Angels right-hander Jered Weaver (4-8) had limited the Royals to one infield single in the first five innings before giving up three runs, one unearned after two errors, and three hits in the sixth. That also snapped Weaver's 21 1/3 scoreless innings streak at Kauffman Stadium.

Astros 5, Tigers 1

Left-hander Dallas Keuchel moved one victory shy of matching the franchise record for consecutive home wins as the Houston Astros defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-1 at Minute Maid Park.

Keuchel (14-6) allowed one run, six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts in seven innings and posted his 12th consecutive decision at home.

Right-hander Danny Darwin won 13 consecutive decisions between the 1989 and 1990 seasons at the Astrodome.

Orioles 8, Athletics 6 (13 innings)

Manny Machado greeted right-hander Aaron Brooks with a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Baltimore Orioles an 8-6 victory over the Oakland A's.

Oakland scored two runs off Orioles closer Zach Britton to tie the game in the ninth. The Orioles then rebounded with the winning rally in the 13th, which started on catcher Caleb Joseph's one-out double to left off left-hander Drew Pomeranz (4-5).

Pomeranz appeared to leave with an injury after that pitch, and Brooks came on. Third baseman Machado then lined an 0-1 pitch into the left-field seats to give the Orioles a victory.

Padres 9, Rockies 5

Matt Kemp hit for the first cycle in San Diego history and Jedd Gyorko belted a three-run homer to highlight a four-run seventh inning that broke a tie and propelled the Padres to a 9-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

Kemp, who went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, tripled home a run in his final at-bat in the ninth inning. Padres hitters had finished one hit shy of a cycle 361 times in their history and a triple shy 258 times.

Dodgers 5, Reds 3

First baseman Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 in front of 43,407 at Dodger Stadium on Friday.

Reds first baseman Joey Votto, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, hit a two-run homer, his 21st long ball this season, in the sixth to cut the deficit to two runs, but Dodgers starter Alex Wood and the bullpen kept Cincinnati hitless from that point on, retiring the final 12 batters.

Giants 8, Nationals 5

Matt Duffy and Hunter Pence belted home runs to help offset Bryce Harper's 30th homer of the season, lifting the San Francisco Giants to a second consecutive victory over the Washington Nationals, 8-5.

Five Giants relievers rescued starter Matt Cain with 4 1/3 shutout innings as San Francisco won for the 11th time in their last 13 home games and improved to 3-1 on their current six-game homestand.



Harper's homer came in a four-run fifth inning that ended Cain's night and rallied the Nationals within 6-5.
