-----------------------------------------------

NFL Note - St. Louis Rams Gaines, E.J.

CB E.J. Gaines had his foot stepped on during the third day of training camp. Very little information was communicated, but there was a sense of foreboding when Gaines visited noted foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte shortly after the injury occurred.

Still, there was no new on Gaines until Saturday, the day following the team's preseason opening 18-3 loss to the Oakland Raiders, when it was revealed that he had undergone surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury and would miss the entire season.

It's a blow for a Rams secondary that appeared to have depth when camp opened. Gaines became a starter last season when Trumaine Johnson suffered a knee injury in the same Aug. 23 preseason game in which then-quarterback Sam Bradford tore his ACL for the second straight season. Gaines remained a starter when Johnson returned, but the latter looks to be the starter again opposite Janoris Jenkins. Johnson had an interception in the game against the Raiders.

Gaines was a sixth-round pick last season and was named to the All-Rookie team voted on by the Pro Football Writers of America.

A team source told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "It's a tough break. But the team will roll on. He'll be 100 percent when he comes back. We'll keep him busy and keep him occupied during his rehab."

-----------------------------------------------

NFL Note - Tennessee Titans Cobb, David

RB David Cobb had 53 yards on 11 carries in his preseason debut against Atlanta. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt promises that Cobb will get some first-team reps later in the preseason.

"Based on what you saw last night, I certainly think he deserves that," Whisenhunt said. "The young man had to get in shape first. That's been a process just because of the quad injury. But he did a really nice job last night and we'll move him up in the rotation as the weeks progress."

-----------------------------------------------

NFL Note - Dallas Cowboys Claiborne, Morris

CB Morris Claiborne was held out of the preseason opener against the Chargers. He missed his 12th career preseason game, having played in only two in his four-year career. The dubious stat is a prime example of why Claiborne has yet to live up to expectations after being a first-round pick in 2012.

Injuries are a major reason why. But this time Claiborne is healthy and he missed the Chargers game out of precaution.

"I definitely wanted to play," Claiborne said. "I felt great. You never know how much you miss it until it's gone away from you and you finally get a chance to put that uniform on.

"When I walked on the field, I felt like it was my first year in the NFL, just being back on a National Football League field and being around the team, and it hyped me up a lot."

Claiborne has missed 18 regular-season games the past two seasons. He missed the majority of last season with a torn patella tendon. But he is healthy and ready to have his best season.

"I feel great. I feel better than I felt in a long time - coming out of cuts, coming out of breaks, guarding guys," he said. "I feel great. I feel like I match breaks with receivers and comes out at the same time, which is something I couldn't do a couple of years ago."

-----------------------------------------------

NFL Note - Dallas Cowboys McClain, Rolando

LB Rolando McClain could miss the entire preseason as the Cowboys slowly rehab him from offseason knee surgery. The Cowboys are taking their time because they can. If defensive end Greg Hardy was eligible to play in the season opener Sept. 13 against the Giants, he could play in Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' mind.

But Hardy will be sidelined for the first four games because of an NFL suspension. So the Cowboys are bringing him along slowly in camp. He remains on the physically unable to perform list but is rehabbing daily.

"His health is at a situation that we could have him ready to play against the Giants," Jones said. "I think he's working toward that and conducting his conditioning and conducting his rehab as though he could play if he were eligible."

Asked if McClain needed to play in the preseason, Jones said: "I don't think that's necessary, not in his case. We know what he can do. That has not been diminished in terms physically what he's able to do. Then you say, 'Well, why do you have preseason?'

"In his case, just really get in good shape, get a plan in shape so he can be mentally prepared when we start having him in meetings in regular season when he comes back."

-----------------------------------------------

NFL Note - St. Louis Rams Saffold, Rodger

G Rodger Saffold, who underwent shoulder surgery in the offseason, was injured on the team's fourth offensive snap against the Raiders Friday night. It is considered minor and was to the shoulder that did not go under the knife.

-----------------------------------------------

NFL Note - St. Louis Rams Bates, Daren

-----------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

NFL Note - Tennessee Titans Tavai, J.R.

-----------------------------------------------

NFL Note - Tennessee Titans Cudjoe-Virgil, Yannik

LB Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil, an undrafted rookie with a chance at outside linebacker, suffered a hamstring injury and could miss some time with the injury.
