Why Discipleship?
Why we do something is far more
important and powerful than what
we’re doing or even how we’re
doing it. With that in mind, Why
Discipleship?
Some have come to view discipleship as
an extra activity for those who have
time and interest.
However, I think there’s more to it.
Yes! Jesus told us to do it, and that’s
a good beginning to the answer to the
question, “Why?” But there’s got to be a
reason He told us to make disciples and
not something else.
Another “why” answer is so we can see
people receive forgiveness and the gift
of eternal life. The good news is often
merely, “God will forgive your sins and
let you into heaven.” Is this the end
all answer to “Why Discipleship?” If
that’s the case, then discipleship is
easy. All we need to do is go around
handing out “heaven-when-you-die”
invitations. If people accept, great!
“Come on in!” And if people reject, “Too
bad for you.” We might as well be
walking around with a plate of cookies
offering people one.
There’s another answer to the Why
question. Starting in August, we’re
going to be unpacking this answer in our
upcoming sermon series titled, Launch
Out! We invite you to come.
