Sabathia left Sunday's game against the Cleveland Indians in the top
of the third because of a sore knee. In July, he had the surgically
repaired knee drained to cope with fluid buildup, and after his
previous start, Sabathia had a cortisone shot.
Sabathia felt the soreness while warming up and it seemed to impact
his velocity and control as he tied a season-high with four walks.
The big lefty, who is making $23 million and under contract for $25
million next year, is 4-9 with a 5.27 ERA this season.

disabled list and activated utility player Steve Pearce from the DL.

The Oakland Athletics fired third base coach Mike Gallego and
replaced him with former Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington.
Washington was on the Athletics' coaching staff from 1996 to 2006
before being hired by the Rangers. He was re-hired by the A's in May
and was the team's infield coach until Monday's change.

After a season remarkably free of serious injuries to key players,
the Chicago Cubs will be without right fielder Jorge Soler (left

shoulder sprain) for the near future after each was placed on the
15-day disabled list.
Second baseman Addison Russell, meanwhile, is listed as day-to-day
with a groin injury and was away from the team Monday with his
fiancee, who was in labor.
