NHL roundup: Sharks edge Leafs in OT

[December 18, 2015]  TORONTO -- Defenseman Brent Burns scored in overtime and the San Jose Sharks defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Thursday.

It was the second win in a row for the Sharks and the second straight overtime loss by the Maple Leafs.

Burns, who also had two assists on the game, took a pass from center Joe Thornton and fired home his 11th goal at 2:13 of overtime.

Joe Pavelski, Patrick Marleau, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Matt Nieto also scored for the Sharks.

Peter Holland, Leo Komarov, James van Riemsdyk and Michael Grabner scored for the Maple Leafs.

Panthers 5, Devils 1

NEWARK, N.J. -- Brandon Pirri had a goal and two assists as Florida Panthers rolled past New Jersey at Prudential Center.

Dmitry Kulikov, Jussi Jokinen, Reilly Smith and Logan Shaw also scored for the Panthers. Al Montoya, who stopped 15 shots, allowed three goals over his past three starts.

Kyle Palmieri scored his 14th goal of the season while Corey Schneider stopped 21 shots in the losing effort for the Devils.

Flyers 2, Canucks 0

PHILADELPHIA -- Steve Mason recorded his first shutout of the season as Philadelphia topped Vancouver at Wells Fargo Center.

Michael Raffl and Sean Couturier provided the goals for the Flyers.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 30 shots in the loss for the Canucks.

Sabres 3, Ducks 0

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Chad Johnson made 44 saves to lead Buffalo over the Anaheim.

Evander Kane, Jake McCabe and Jamie McGinn scored for the Sabres, who had the upper hand throughout the game despite being outshot 44-22.

John Gibson made 19 saves for the Ducks, who lost for the fifth time in their last eight games.

Kings 3, Canadiens 0

MONTREAL -- Two quick goals in the second period lifted Los Angeles over Montreal at the Bell Centre.

Jonathan Quick stopped 45 shots for the Kings while Mike Condon made 17 saves for Montreal, which was shut out for the first time this season.

Drew Doughty, Anze Kopitar and Marian Gaborik scored for Los Angeles.

Blues 2, Predators 1

ST. LOUIS -- Vladimir Tarasenko scored a power-play goal with 5:20 left in the third period to snap a tie and lift St. Louis over Nashville.

It was the fourth consecutive game with a goal for Tarasenko, tying the longest goal-scoring streak of his career.

David Backes scored the other goal for the Blues while Roman Josi scored on a power-play for the Predators.

Wild 5, Rangers 2

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- A pair of goals 40 seconds apart midway through the third period broke open a one-goal game and lifted Minnesota over the New York Rangers at Xcel Energy Center.

Jason Pominville and Chris Porter each beat Henrik Lundqvist with backhand shots in short order to give the Wild a much-needed cushion in a tight game.

Mikko Koivu, Ryan Suter and Matt Dumba also scored for the Wild while Dominic Moore and Ryan McDonagh scored for the Rangers.

Blackhawks 4, Oilers 0

CHICAGO -- Corey Crawford recorded a shutout while making 33 saves in Chicago's win over Edmonton.

Crawford has been nearly unbeatable for the Blackhawks in December. He has registered shutouts in three of the last four games and hasn't allowed more than two goals in seven of eight starts during the month.

Teuvo Teravainen, Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa and Artemi Panarin scored for the Blackhawks.

Cam Talbot stopped 33 of 37 shots for the Oilers.

Flames 3, Stars 1

DALLAS -- Karri Ramo stopped 35 of 36 shots, spurring Calgary over Dallas at American Airlines Center.

Sean Monahan, Dougie Hamilton and Mason Raymond scored goals for the Flames, who won their seventh consecutive game.

Johnny Oduya, on a short-handed tally in the first period, got the Stars' lone goal.

Blue Jackets 7, Coyotes 5

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Seven Columbus players scored, 11 had points, and Brandon Saad, Cam Atkinson and Alex Wennberg led the way with a goal and two assists apiece in a win over Arizona.
 


Matt Calvert, Nick Foligno, David Clarkson and Brandon Dubinsky also scored for the Blue Jackets.

Tobias Rieder scored twice and Antoine Vermette, Viktor Tikhonov and Jordan Martinook scored for the Coyotes.

Avalanche 2, Islanders 1

DENVER -- Francois Beauchemin had his first-two goal game of the season, Semyon Varlamov stopped 33 shots, and Colorado beat the New York Islanders.

The Avalanche won a season-high four in a row and have crawled back into the Western Conference playoff picture after another slow start to the season.

Thomas Greiss stopped 28 shots and Brock Nelson scored for the Islanders, who lost for the second straight game after going 8-0-2 in their previous 10.
