INF Elian Herrera, designated for assignment by the Brewers on Jan.
30, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Colorado Springs
on Feb. 3. Herrera, 30, hit .274/.288/.341 with no homers and five
RBIs in 69 games for Milwaukee last year.

MLB Note - Pittsburgh Pirates Lombardozzi, Steve
INF Steve Lombardozzi was acquired by the Pirates from the Orioles
in a cash deal on Feb. 3, and he was invited to Pittsburgh's major
league spring camp. Lombardozzi, 26, hit .288 with a .297 on-base
percentage, a .329 slugging percentage, no homers and two RBIs in 20
games with Baltimore last year. He spent the bulk of the season with
Triple-A Norfolk, batting .270/.307/.311 with no homers and 30 RBIs
in 78 games. The Orioles outrighted him off the 40-man roster in
December.

MLB Note - St. Louis Cardinals Ohlman, Michael
C Michael Ohlman, designated for assignment by Baltimore on Jan. 27,
was acquired by the Cardinals from the Orioles in a cash deal on
Feb. 3. Ohlman, 24, hit .236/.310/.318 with two homers and 33 RBIs
in 113 games for Double-A Bowie last year. An 11th-round draft pick
by Baltimore in 2009, Ohlman has no major league experience.

MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Moustakas, Mike
3B Mike Moustakas and the Royals avoided arbitration, agreeing to a
one-year, $2.64 million contract on Feb. 3. Moustakas, 26, was
eligible for arbitration for the first time and had sought $3.1
million. The Royals countered with a $1.85 million offer. Moustakas
posted the least-productive offensive season of his career as he
batted a career-low .212, but he was clutch in October. He homered
five times and slugged .558 in the playoffs.

MLB Note - No MLB Team Free Agents Zito, Barry
LHP Barry Zito threw for a select group of teams Feb. 3 as he hopes
to make a comeback. The 36-year-old veteransat out all of 2014. He
last pitched in 2013 with the Giants, compiling a 5.74 ERA in 30
outings. For his career, Zito sports a 4.02 ERA and a 165-143
record. MLB.com reported that Zito has made mechanical adjustments
and is prepared to give it one more shot.

MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Axford, John
RHP John Axford signed a minor league contract with the Rockies on
Feb. 3. The former Brewers and Indians closer will get an invitation
to spring training with a chance to win a job as a setup man for RHP
LaTroy Hawkins. Axford opened last season as the closer for
Cleveland but was unable to hold onto the job before being released.
He latched on with Pittsburgh and ended the season with a 2-4 record
and a 3.95 ERA in 62 games with the two teams. Axford's deal
guarantees him a $2.6 million base salary if he makes the major
league roster, and he can make an additional $1.5 million in
incentives.

MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Cain, Lorenzo
OF Lorenzo Cain and the Royals reached agreement on a one-year,
$2,725,000 contract on Feb. 3, avoiding arbitration. Cain, 28, asked
for $3.6 million, and the Royals offered $2 million when arbitration
figures were exchanged earlier. It was Cain's first year of
arbitration eligibility. In 133 games last year, Cain batted .301
with five homers, 53 RBIs and 28 stolen bases. He has a career .279
batting average.

INF Yoan Moncada is drawing interest from nearly a dozen major
league teams, most recently Detroit. The Tigers invited the
19-year-old Cuban switch hitter to their complex at Lakeland, Fla.,
last week. Moncada also visited the Rays. According to ESPN,
scouting reports peg Moncada as a "Robinson Cano-type" hitter who
would be the No. 1 pick in the amateur draft if he was available.
The Yankees are considered the favorites to sign Moncada, with the
bidding to be in the millions.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Hamilton, Josh
OF Josh Hamilton faces shoulder surgery that will sideline him for
six to eight weeks. Hamilton will undergo a procedure Feb. 4 to
repair the AC joint in his right shoulder, which he injured late in
the 2014 season and forced him to miss most of September. The
shoulder flared up during an offseason workout in late January. The
recovery time from the injury leaves Hamilton's availability for the
start of the regular season in question. The 33-year-old veteran
battled injuries the past two years after signing with the Angels in
December 2012. In 89 games last season, he batted .263/.331/.414
with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs.

MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Gonzalez, Miguel
RHP Miguel Gonzalez and the Orioles reached agreement on a one-year,
$3,275,000 contract on Feb. 3, avoiding arbitration. Gonzalez, 30,
went 10-9 with a 3.23 ERA in 27 games (26 starts) in the 2014
regular season. He lost his only postseason appearance, giving up
two runs (one earned) in 5 2/3 innings against the Royals in the AL
Championship Series.

MLB Note - San Diego Padres Nieves, Wil
C Wil Nieves signed a minor league deal with the Padres on Feb. 2,
and he was invited to the team's major league spring camp. He will
attempt to win a job as C Derek Norris' backup. Nieves, 37, batted
.254/.270/.344 with one homer and seven RBIs in 36 games for
Philadelphia last year. Over 11 major league seasons, he has a
.243/.281/.317 batting line with nine home runs and 110 RBIs in 421
games.
