02/06/2015 MLB Note - Detroit Tigers Martinez, Victor

DH Victor Martinez sustained a torn medial meniscus in his left knee during workouts and will undergo surgery next week, the team announced Feb. 5. Martinez was injured last week, the team said, and the knee is scheduled to be repaired by Dr. James Andrews on Feb. 10 in Pensacola, Fla. Recovery time for such a surgery is generally four to six weeks.

Martinez had surgery for a torn ACL in the same knee in 2012 -- another injury that occurred during offseason workouts -- and missed the season. Martinez, 36, hit .335/.409/.565 with 32 home runs and 103 RBIs in 2014 as Detroit won a fourth straight AL Central title. He finished second in American League MVP voting behind Angels OF Mike Trout. Martinez signed a four-year, $68 million contract this offseason and is set to be paid $14 million in 2015.

However, the Dominican has a .230/.297/.375 hitting line with 56 homers and 262 RBIs in 586 games over five minor league seasons. Salcedo batted .212/.294/.357 with 10 homers and 44 RBIs in 110 games for Triple-A Gwinnett last year.
