MLB Note - San Diego Padres Shields, James

RHP James Shields and the Padres agreed to a four-year contract, according to multiple reports Feb. 9. SB Nation reported Shields' deal, pending a physical, is worth between $72 million and $78 million. The contract includes a club option for a fifth year, a source told ESPN.com. The deal will be the richest in franchise history.

One certainty the Padres are banking on is that Shields will remain a workhorse. The 33-year-old right-hander pitched at least 200 innings each of the past eight seasons, and he topped 225 innings each of the past four seasons. He was a double-digit winner in all eight years, averaging 33 starts. Shields had a 14-8 record with a 3.21 ERA, 180 strikeouts and just 44 walks in 227 innings for the Royals last season. He lost both of his starts in the 2014 World Series against the San Francisco Giants, and he wound up 1-2 with a 6.12 ERA in five playoff starts last year.
