02/13/2015 MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Richards, Garrett
RHP Garrett Richards, who underwent knee surgery in August, is set
to start throwing from a mound. Richards received clearance Feb. 12
after an exam in Southern California, and he plans to pitch off a
mound in Arizona on Feb. 16, four days before the scheduled first
workout for Angels pitchers and catchers. "The fact he's gone so
quickly and had no setbacks is fantastic," Angels GM Jerry Dipoto
said, according to the Orange County Register. "I couldn't be any
happier."
Richards, 26, was one of the most dominating pitchers in the
American League before tearing his left patellar tendon while
covering first base on a play at Fenway Park in August. He went 13-4
with a 2.61 ERA in 26 starts last year, striking out 164 in 168 2/3
innings.

MLB Note - Philadelphia Phillies Papelbon, Jonathan
RHP Jonathon Papelbon will report to spring training with the
Phillies after talks broke off with the Brewers on Feb. 12. Papelbon
was on the trade block most of the offseason. The Phillies rejected
a deal from the Brewers that would have sent former Dodgers, Royals
and Reds RHP Jonathan Broxton to Philadelphia to help offset
Papelbon's remaining salary, according to multiple reports. Broxton
will make $9 million in 2015, and Papelbon has one year left at $13
million. However, a vesting option for another $13 million becomes
guaranteed for 2016 if Papelbon closes 48 games.

MLB Note - Seattle Mariners Weeks, Rickie
INF Rickie Weeks agreed to a deal with the Mariners on Feb. 12, but
where he lands on the field is up in the air. Weeks, 32, will land a
two-year, $4 million contract that includes $2 million in
incentives, according to multiple reports. He was exclusively a
second baseman with the Brewers, including in 2014, when he hit
.274/.356/.452 in a platoon role. With the team's highest-paid
player at second base -- Robinson Cano -- and Kyle Seager entrenched
at third, Weeks could be tried in the outfield or as a right-handed
platoon with 1B Logan Morrison. Weeks also could be viewed as a
roster alternative to veteran UT Willie Bloomquist, who remains on
the roster but is a question mark coming back from microfracture
knee surgery.

MLB Note - San Francisco Giants McGehee, Casey
3B Casey McGehee and the Giants avoided arbitration, agreeing to a
one-year, $4.8 million contract on Feb. 12. McGehee, 32, requested
$5.4 million, and the Giants countered with $4 million when
arbitration figures were exchanged. McGehee is penciled in to
replace the departed Pablo Sandoval at third base in 2015. Last
season with the Marlins, McGehee batted .287 with four home runs and
76 RBIs in 160 games.

MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Herrera, Kelvin
RHP Kelvin Herrera and the Royals avoided arbitration for this
winter and next, reaching agreement on a two-year, $4.15 million
contract Feb. 12. Herrera, 25, posted a 1.41 ERA with a 4-3 record
and 20 holds in 70 relief appearances last year. In the past three
seasons, Herrera became one of the top setup relievers in baseball.
In 207 games starting with the 2012 season, he has a 13-14 record,
five saves, 60 holds, 210 strikeouts and a 2.57 ERA.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Houston Astros Hernandez, Roberto
RHP Roberto Hernandez signed a minor league contract with the Astros
on Feb. 12, and he received an invitation to the team's major league
spring camp. Hernandez, 34, pitched for the Phillies and the Dodgers
last year, logging a combined 8-11 record with a 4.10 ERA in 165
innings. Formerly known as Fausto Carmona, Hernandez is a nine-year
veteran with a 67-93 career record and a 4.60 ERA for the Indians,
Rays, Phillies and Dodgers. Hernandez was an All-Star in 2010.

MLB Note - Atlanta Braves Simmons, Shae
RHP Shae Simmons will miss the 2015 season after undergoing Tommy
John surgery Feb. 12. The team announced that Dr. James Andrews
performed the operation in Florida.
Simmons was shut down for the remainder of the 2014 season in late
July due to a right shoulder strain. However, he experienced elbow
discomfort when he started his offseason throwing program in early
February, leading to an MRI exam that diagnosed a torn ulnar
collateral ligament, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
The 24-year-old right-hander went 1-2 with one save, nine holds and
a 2.91 ERA in 26 relief appearances for Atlanta in 2014. It was his
first major league experience.
