[January 09, 2015]  Jan 8 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Thursday's National Hockey League games.

Flyers 3, Capitals 2 (overtime)

Jakub Voracek scored a power-play goal 1:28 into overtime to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals.

In addition to Voracek, who leads the NHL with 49 points on 16 goals and 33 assists, the Flyers (16-18-7) also got goals from R.J. Umberger and Sean Couturier.

Washington goaltender Braden Holtby made 30 saves while starting his 23rd straight game, a Caps (21-12-7) record.

Blues 7, Sharks 2

Alexander Steen scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 7-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

Seven different players scored for the Blues (25-13-3), who have now scored 20 goals in their last three games.

The Sharks fell to 22-15-5 with the loss.

Predators 3, Stars 2 (OT)

Shea Weber scored his second goal of the night 17 seconds into overtime to lift Nashville to a 3-2 overtime win over the Dallas Stars.

After placing James Neal and Eric Nystrom on injured reserve during the day, the Predators lost defenseman Ryan Ellis in the second period with a lower-body injury. His status for Saturday's game in Minnesota is not yet known.

Nashville (27-9-4) are tied with Anaheim at the top of the Western Conference with 58 points and remain in first place in the Central Division.

Bruins 3, Devils 0

Boston backup goaltender Niklas Svedberg needed to make just 14 saves in the Bruins' 3-0 win over New Jersey.

Milan Lucic scored twice for the Bruins (21-15-6), who outshot the Devils 43-14.

The Devils (15-20-7) had won two in a row before Thursday's game.

Hurricanes 5, Sabres 2

Four different players scored in the second period for Carolina, including three in a 79-second stretch, as the Hurrucanes took a 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

The Hurricanes (13-24-4) notched more than three goals for only the second time since late November, winning the matchup with Buffalo (14-25-3) in a battle of the two worst teams in the Eastern Conference.

Panthers 3, Canucks 1

Jonathan Huberdeau scored twice to help make goaltender Roberto Luongo's homecoming a success as the Florida Panthers defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-1.

The Panthers (18-11-9) had some anxious moments late in the third period after Dave Bolland was given a four-minute high-sticking penalty, giving Vancouver (23-13-3) a five-on-three power play for 40 seconds.

The game was Luongo's first in Vancouver since being traded to Florida on March 4. He received a standing ovation from the Rogers Arena crowd during a first-period video tribute.

He kept the Panthers in the game by making 32 stops.

Rangers 4, Kings 3

Three goals in the second period rallied the New York Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

A power-play goal from Martin St. Louis at 8:17 of the second period was the difference as the Rangers (23-11-4) won their fourth in a row and their 12th in the past 13 games.

The Kings (19-13-9) dropped their second straight.

Rangers goalie Cam Talbot turned away 28 of 31 shots, while Kings netminder Jonathan Quick recorded 22 saves on 26 attempts.

Blackhawks 4, Wild 2

The Chicago Blackhawks scored a 4-2 win over Minnesota, who were playing without Zach Parise after the winger's father, former NHL player J.P. Parise, died on Wednesday night.

The Wild (18-16-5) paid tribute to J.P. Parise with a video presentation and a moment of silence.

Bryan Bickell scored twice, including an empty-netter, and Patrick Kane added a goal and an assist for Chicago. Corey Crawford backstopped Chicago's (27-12-2) third consecutive win with 42 saves.

Coyotes 4, Jets 1

Shane Doan had a goal and two assists as the Coyotes matched a season-high with three power-play goals in a 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Mike Smith made 34 saves for the Coyotes (16-20-4).

Avalanche 5, Senators 2

Jarome Iginla scored two goals, goaltender Semyon Varlamov had 36 saves, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Ottawa Senators 5-2.

Iginla's two goals gave him 572 for his career. He is now one behind Mike Bossy for 20th on the NHL all-time goal list. (Compiled by Jahmal Corner; Editing by Peter Rutherford)
