01/11/2015 MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Zobrist, Ben

UT Ben Zobrist and SS Yunel Escobar were acquired by the A's from the Rays for C John Jaso, SS Daniel Robertson, OF Boog Powell and cash on Jan. 10. The newcomers likely will become Oakland's double-play combination, with Zobrist playing mostly at second base in addition to seeing some time in the outfield.

Zobrist, 33, had spent his entire nine-year career with the Rays, playing second base, shortstop and right field. The two-time All-Star batted .272/.354/.395 with 10 home runs and 52 RBIs last season.

Zobrist, a switch hitter, is entering the final year of his contract, and he is due $7.5 million next season.

SS Yunel Escobar and UT Ben Zobrist were acquired by the A's from the Rays for C John Jaso, SS Daniel Robertson, OF Boog Powell and cash on Jan. 10. The newcomers likely will become Oakland's double-play combination, with Zobrist playing mostly at second base in addition to seeing some time in the outfield.

Escobar, in his second season with Tampa Bay and eighth in the majors in 2014, batted .258/.324/.340 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs. Escobar, 32, is due to earn $5 million this season and $7 million in 2016, with a club option for 2017 at $7 million with a $1 million buyout.

MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Jaso, John

C John Jaso, SS Daniel Robertson, OF Boog Powell and cash were acquired by the Rays from the A's on Jan. 10 in exchange for UT Ben Zobrist and SS Yunel Escobar.

Jaso, 31, appeared in 99 games last season for Oakland, batting .264/.337/.430 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs. He is eligible for arbitration this winter after making $2.3 million last season. Jaso played three seasons with Tampa Bay before going to Seattle in November 2011. The A's acquired him in a three-team deal involving the Mariners and Nationals in January 2013.

Each of his last two seasons ended due to concussions, but Jaso told the Tampa Bay Times he experienced no concussion symptoms during the offseason.

MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Robertson, Daniel Ray

SS Daniel Robertson, OF Boog Powell, C John Jaso and cash were acquired by the Rays from the A's on Jan. 10 in exchange for UT Ben Zobrist and SS Yunel Escobar.

Robertson, 20, was a first-round draft selection of the A's in 2012. He batted .310/.402/.471 with 15 homers at Class A Stockton last season.

MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Powell, Boog

OF Boog Powell, C John Jaso, SS Daniel Robertson and cash were acquired by the Rays from the A's on Jan. 10 in exchange for UT Ben Zobrist and SS Yunel Escobar.

Powell, who turns 22 on Jan. 14, batted .343/.451/.435 with three homers, 28 RBIs and 16 stolen bases while splitting last season between Stockton and Class A Beloit. He is not related to former Baltimore Orioles slugger Boog Powell.

MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Young, Delmon

DH Delmon Young will remain with the Baltimore Orioles for a second season after a one-year, $2.25 million contract for 2015 was finalized Jan. 9. Incentives could boost the total value of the deal to $3 million. Young, 29, batted .302/.337/.442 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 83 games last season. He went 10-for-20 as a pinch hitter. One of his biggest hits of the season was a three-run, pinch double against the Detroit Tigers in Game 2 of the American League Division Series. Young has a career .283 batting average in 1,066 games.

MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Lavarnway, Ryan

C Ryan Lavarnway was designated for assignment by the Orioles on Jan. 9, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for newly re-signed DH Delmon Young. In his wild offseason, Lavarnway was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Nov. 25. The Dodgers claimed Lavarnway off waivers on Dec. 5. Lavarnway was soon designated for assignment again, and the Cubs claimed him off waivers on Dec. 19. The Cubs then placed him on waivers, and the Orioles claimed him on Dec. 23. A former Boston prospect, Lavarnway hit .201/.249/.315 with five homers and 34 RBIs in 97 games over four seasons with the Red Sox.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Denorfia, Chris

OF Chris Denorfia signed a one-year, $2.6 million deal with the Cubs on Jan. 9. The right-handed hitter could serve as a part of a platoon in left field. Denorfia, 34, split last season between San Diego and Seattle, hitting a combined .230/.284/.318 with three homers and 21 RBIs in 121 games.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Kickham, Mike

LHP Mike Kickham, acquired by the Cubs off waivers from the Giants on Dec. 23, was designated for assignment by Chicago on Jan. 9 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for OF Chris Denorfia. Kickham, 26, made two September relief appearances for San Francisco last season, allowing five runs in two innings. In 27 starts for Triple-A Fresno, he went 8-8 with a 4.43 ERA.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Arruebarrena, Erisbel

SS Erisbel Arruebarrena, designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Dec. 31, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 24-year-old Cuban defector signed a five-year, $25 million deal with the Dodgers in February. Arruebarrena hit .195/.244/.220 with no homers and four RBIs in 22 games for Los Angeles last season. He batted a combined .259/.304/.417 with six homers and 32 RBIs in 68 games for four teams in the Dodgers' farm system.

MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Cabrera, Asdrubal

INF Asdrubal Cabrera and the Rays finalized a one-year, $7.5 million free agent deal on Jan. 10, and he is likely to become Tampa Bay's shortstop in the wake of the team trading SS Yunel Escobar and UT Ben Zobrist to Oakland. Cabrera spent the first seven years of his major league career with the Indians before going to the Nationals last season. In 2014, he batted .241 with 14 home runs and 61 RBIs in 146 games. An All-Star in 2011, Cabrera hit 25 home runs and had 92 RBIs with a .273 batting average that season with the Indians, but his numbers since declined. The 29-year-old can play shortstop and second base.

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Parrino, Andy

INF Andy Parrino was designated for assignment by the A's on Jan. 10 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired SS Yunel Escobar. Parrino, 29, hit .152/.316/.283 with one homer and three RBIs in 21 games for Oakland last year. In 103 Triple-A games, he batted .274/.352/.384 with seven homers and 57 RBIs.

MLB Note - Washington Nationals Werth, Jayson

OF Jayson Werth underwent arthroscopic surgery on his troublesome right shoulder Jan. 9. He is expected to need two to three months to recover, meaning he could miss all of spring training and possibly the start of the regular season. Werth, 35, played through the injury last year, batting .292/.394/.455 with 16 home runs and 82 RBIs in 147 regular-season games.
