01/13/2015 MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Hunter, Tommy
RHP Tommy Hunter and the Orioles avoided arbitration, agreeing
to a $4.65 million, one-year contract on Jan. 12. Hunter was
paid $3 million last season, when he struggled early, went on
the disabled list with a groin injury in May and lost the closer
role to Zach Britton. However, Hunter rallied to become a key
contributor as a setup man as the Orioles won the AL East.
Hunter went 3-2 with a 2.97 ERA and 11 saves in 17 chances, but
he had a 1.83 ERA in his final 41 games. He struck out 45 and
walked 12 in 60 2/3 innings.

MLB Note - Chicago White Sox Viciedo, Dayan
LF Dayan Viciedo and the White Sox agreed to a one-year, $4.4
million contract Jan. 12, avoiding arbitration. The Cuban
defector hit .231 with 21 home runs and 58 RBIs last season and
-- if he makes the roster -- is expected to fill a reserve role
behind free agent acquisition Melky Cabrera and a healthy
Avisail Garcia next season. Viciedo made $2.8 million in 2014
and remains arbitration-eligible for two more years.

MLB Note - Pittsburgh Pirates Kang, Jung-Ho
SS Jung-Ho Kang and the Pirates reached a contract agreement on
Jan. 12, multiple media outlets reported.
The four-year deal reportedly is worth around $4.5 million per
season, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Pirates
won the rights to negotiate with Kang when they submitted the
high bid of $5,002,015 on Dec. 21, the Yonhap News Agency
reported.
Kang hit .354 with 39 homers last season for the Nexen Heroes
while being named the MVP of the Korean Baseball Organization.

MLB Note - Detroit Tigers Cabrera, Miguel
1B Miguel Cabrera is healing well, but he still might not be
ready for the start of the 2015 season. Tigers trainer Kevin
Rand said Jan. 12 that Cabrera resumed weight-bearing activities
last month on his right ankle, from which he had bone spurs
removed and a stress fracture repaired in October. Cabrera also
is doing upper-body training. Cabrera's next exam is scheduled
for mid-February with Dr. Robert Anderson, who performed the
operation.
Rand said that Cabrera will not be at full strength for the
start of spring training in late February. Detroit opens its
season April 6 against the visiting Minnesota Twins. "That's too
far out right now," Rand said. "First of all we have to get him
clear to do the activities."
