Deadline nears for student art contest
Art celebrating Lincoln and 10th anniversary of Lincoln Presidential Library must be submitted by Jan. 30

[January 13, 2015]  SPRINGFIELD – Time is running out for students to use their talents and creativity to honor Abraham Lincoln as part of the 150th anniversary of his death and the 10th anniversary of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

The deadline for entering the contest is Jan. 30. The winning submissions will be displayed in April, when the presidential library plans a full schedule of events to mark these important anniversaries.

Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way for students to connect with historic events and consider their meaning.

Art for the contest can be almost anything a student imagines, as long as it relates to the presidential museum’s anniversary, which is also the anniversary year for the end of the Civil War and the death of Abraham Lincoln. The piece must be done on poster board 11 inches wide by 14 inches high; and it cannot use copyrighted characters such as Iron Man or Mickey Mouse.

The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high school. There will be winners in three categories: Grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.
